American Idol Recap: A Butterfly, a Bloomer, a Growling Girl, and One Sickening Performance!

May 09, 2012 07:19 PM by Candace Young

Last week, powerhouse performer, Skylar Laine, was ousted from American Idol, leaving just four contestants in the competition. This week, the Top 4 will perform songs written by Californians; ‘California Dreamin”, followed by a song they wish they had written, or that inspires them. Keep reading for highlights…

California Dreamin’ Round

Phil Phillips kicks things off on American Idol tonight. Dressed as casually as he was back in the audition round, he grooves it out to Have You Ever Seen The Rain by CCR.  The crowd goes nuts. Steven and Jennifer Lopez are on board, but Randy miffs the audience by saying it was pitchy at the start.  He gives them the hand and says, wait…it was sensational after the first bit.

Hollie Cavanaugh, who somehow outlasted Skylar last week, is doing a Journey tune, Faithfully. She looks pretty, it’s a good song choice, and her vocals are strong, but her performance remains a tad vanilla. The judges wax on about how much she’s grown since she got turned away last season. Steven Tyler makes a speech about her being like a flower blooming.

Joshua Ledet does a theatrical rendition of You Raise Me Up. Naturally, he sings his butt off. Once again, the judges can’t come up with anything new to say to him and can’t critique him, so he listens politely while they tell him for the upteenth time how glad they are to have him on the American Idol stage and that he has an amazing career ahead of him.

Jessica Sanchez starts off perched on a piano and sings a jazzy, raunchy Etta James tune full of growling, runs, and attitude! Initially I worry she’s doing a song that’s too ‘old’ for her again, but this time she pulls it off! She gets the sassy, bluesy vibe bang on. The judges love it.

Phillip and Joshua team up to perform This Love by Maroon 5. The guys seem much more comfortable than last week when they were embarrassed to sing a love song together! They have such different styles, but somehow mesh on this tune – love it!

Jessica and Hollie do a duet as well. I want to hate it immediately because they’re on swings – cheesy! The song is Eternal Flame, and it’s relatively boring until they get off the swings and bump it up a notch toward the end.  Randy calls it ‘strange’.

The contestants see a preview of Rock of Ages, and afterward, Ryan Seacrest makes it look like he’s going to propose to girlfriend, Julianne Hough, who is in the film. Instead of pulling out an engagement ring, he produces a fan letter and asks her to give it to Tom Cruise for him! Too much! He really had me going!

All four contestants sing Waiting For A Girl Like You by Foreigner. It’s a pretty corny arrangement. Yeah.

Contestant Song Choice Round

Phillip is compared to a butterfly by Jimmy in practice. He’s doing Volcano by Damien Rice. It’s a particularly heartfelt and soulful arrangement, infused with his own subtle vocal inflections. The judges focus on the beauty of the song and how artistic Philip is. Randy thinks it’s his best performance of the whole season.

Hollie wishes she wrote I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt. Jimmy warns her about over singing it. She sings it well, but the sentiment feels too mature for her.  Steven and Jennifer both feel it fell short, and Randy says it lacked a ‘moment’.

It’s a Man’s World by James Brown is the song Joshua has selected as inspirational for him. Fitting since he often sounds like Brown in his performances. Joshua’s rendition is mind-bogglingly rich with runs and the judges come to their feet by the end! Steven says he’s never heard anything like that in his life! Jennifer rants in Spanish – it was sickening! Randy thinks it’s the best in the history of any singing show! Man, I’d love to hear Simon Cowell weigh in right now!

Jessica has selected Jennifer Holliday’s I Am Telling You for her final song of the night. She’s in a cute dress featuring one incongruous hot pink sleeve, but her rip-tearing vocals soon draw the attention away from that bit of curiosity. She sings like a woman possessed – like a diva possessed! The judges stand up, and then rave – another performance they just don’t know what to do with!

Jennifer Lopez and David Cook perform on tomorrow night’s results show – who will go home? Who will be in the Top 3?

Holly is great and has a good career, but not cut out to win American Idol. Her rendition of Jennifer Holiday’s song didnt have the “evinrude” behind it. The impact was not as strong.

Evidently the judges didn”t watch The Voice! Jessica Sims renditon of This is a Man”s World clearly was superior to Joshua’s. Not even close!
