The Real Housewives Of New Jersey: Are You Team Teresa Or Team Melissa?

May 09, 2012 10:01 AM by Martha Zaborowski

It’s hard to keep track of the latest battle between feuding sister-in-laws, Teresa Giudice and Melissa Gorga of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Luckily for viewers, these ladies have no problem dissecting each problem we see on RHONJ in their Bravo blogs. Let’s read the latest points of contention and see whose side we’re on, shall we?

Battle #1: Going to jail vs. “going away”

We saw on the last episode Teresa clearly ask her family not to discuss her husband going to jail. Teresa did, however, insinuate his situation by talking about his “going away.” Melissa deliberately chose not to “speak Teresa” and started talking about Joe Giudice and using words like “jail” and “prison.”

Teresa’s take:

The one thing I can’t always be open about though is open legal cases. Not because I’m trying to hide anything, but because that’s what your lawyers tell you…What’s crazy to me though, is that my family and friends know this because of their own legal issues, yet keep bringing up mine anyway, even though I ask them not to privately and on camera.

Melissa’s take:

I’m left there hanging because Super T decided she didn’t want to talk about a “legal subject” that she brought up in the first place and has spoken about publicly many times in the tabloids. OK, I get it, don’t use that word!

This writer’s take:

I’m not sure why Melissa decided to slip in Teresa’s Halloween costume nickname, Super T, here. Little condescending? Something that I came across that was interesting was a tweet from Alex McCord, formerly of The Real Housewives of New York, in reference to this scene: “Aha – somebody broke the off camera rules. Clearly Teresa had told producers and everyone else to never say the word ‘jail’ and Melissa said it.”

Battle #2 Gold-digger vs. soul sister

Teresa warned her brother Joe that his wife might be a gold-digger. Joe told Melissa. All hell broke loose.

Teresa’s take:

I care about Joey and try and look out for him, and he does the same for me. This one tiny little conversation though happened MONTHS before we started filming. I only wanted Joey to hear me — not his wife, not my friends, not all of America. If I ever thought for one second that he would tell everyone we knew and bring it up on national TV out of the blue, months later, believe me, I never would have said it. If I was out to hurt him or his marriage, I wouldn’t have talked to him, and only him, in private.

Melissa’s take:

I honestly can’t help but feel that she is projecting the issues in her life onto mine. After watching this episode, I think it’s extremely obvious what my sister-in-law is trying to do. The question is why would she do it? Does she think that if my marriage goes badly hers will get better?

I am woman who loves my husband more than anything in this world. I will bend over backwards for him and my children. She knows that and I think at times she wishes she had more on me. How about just being happy that your brother is happy? You can throw dirt in my face a couple times and I will take it, but DON’T, mess with my family, DON’T mess with my children’s lives, and DON’T mess with my marriage. That is where I will NEVER back down.

Battle #3: Joe vs. Joe

Joe Gorga has accused Joe Giudice of cheating. Joe Gorga claims he is being a good brother by being honest with Teresa about the rumors. Teresa doesn’t see how this any different than when Teresa discusses with Joe rumors she hears about Melissa.

Teresa’s take:

There’s been a million stories accusing Joe of cheating on me or me leaving him, but there’s never been any truth to it or we still wouldn’t be together and have such a strong marriage.

…in this episode, my brother Joey said my husband “brainwashed” me…and a hundred other things…If I took it all personally, I’d go insane.

Melissa’s take:

When Joey confronted her, she tries to put it on him and say that he tells her rumors about Joe, which is not true. My husband did not intentionally tell Teresa about her husband cheating. Those rumors have been around for years and in the same tabloids she gives interviews to and poses with her children… But again, when Teresa gets called out, she spins it perfectly by saying tell your husband not to tell me about my husband cheating. Which is it Teresa, did your brother tell you about Joe cheating or did you read Joe’s text messages?

This writer’s take of the battles: It was wrong for Teresa to say Melissa might be a gold-digger. There was no merit to that, and nothing productive came out from that statement. It is also counter-productive for Melissa to deliberately push Teresa’s buttons by saying the word “jail,” no matter how silly that phrase may seem to us. (“New home” and “re-done home” seemed pretty silly to us last season, but it sure mean something in Gorga-Giudice speak.) It is also a bad idea to imply that Teresa is talking bad about Melissa’s marriage to make hers better. Teresa says she is happy in her marriage, so Melissa should accept that at face value. Just like we should accept at face value Melissa’s claim that Bravo contacted Melissa first to be on RHONJ and not the rumor that Melissa contacted Danielle Staub first to audition for the show – right, Melissa?

Both want attention. But I like Teresa a lot better than Melissa. Melissa came on the show to hurt Teresa. kathy has no character and follows along. Teresa never talked bad about her family before they came 0on. Then Melissa starting e-mailing Danelle and lied about it and got on the show. If caroline is as smart as she pretends to be, why hasn’t she investigated that. Joe and Teresa’s parents do not like Melissa. Since Andy is so smitten with Joe Gorga and Albie Manzo, he will never call Melissa out. Why doesn’t Andy bring in two of Caroline’s siblings she isn’t talking to, not Dina, and make them cast members. What is the difference in knowing Teresa had a problem and inviting them on the show and adding some more Lauritas where there is a known problem. Caroline would quit in a flash!!
