Melissa Gilbert’s Elimination From Dancing With The Stars: Was It A Political Campaign By The Judges?

May 09, 2012 09:33 AM by Lisa Princ

We know that you can’t get the almost nude image of Len Goodman out of your head from the results show on ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars last night, but we have a more serious issue today. After Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were eliminated last night, not surprisingly, the judges are now being accused of plotting some sort of political campaign against them. Yep, we’re sure you know whose mouth that came out of, but read on for the details!

Despite being more quiet and controlled with his temper this season on Dancing With The Stars, the controversy king, aka Maksim Chmerkovskiy is back at it! After he and his partner, Melissa Gilbert were eliminated from the show, Maks was not thrilled and in denial as he told reporters: “I’m not going to lie to you. I don’t feel like this was a fan elimination. I feel like it was a political campaign of some sort, but I’m not bitter about it, you know?” Hmm, not bitter? He’s basically accusing the judges of influencing the fans that much? Come on Maks, we love you, but the fans can make up their own minds.

Melissa Gilbert was not the best dancer from the get go, so for her, it was no surprise that she was eliminated. The Little House on The Prairie star had no hard feelings after the show as she said: “It would have been really, really unfair to see Katherine go home because of a glitch. A wardrobe malfunction. She’s an extraordinary dancer. An extraordinary dancer and I told her before, ‘It’s not going to be you.’” Melissa Gilbert thanked her fans, and is glad to be able to take a breather now. The best part of the show for her? Learning that she was capable of more than she imagined she was!

Now it’s your turn to sound off! Was Melissa Gilbert’s elimination nothing more than a political campaign? Comment and share your thoughts below!

I am totally surprised that Melissa Gilbert stayed in as long as she did! I am a ballroom dance fan and in all of the weeks she performed, I saw no real improvement – not at all like the other dancers.

The fans did her no favors by continuing to vote for her. It’s a competition, not a charity.

Yes, Melissa was not the best dancer, she hit her good days and worse days, not always consistent; and she had an attitude. I’m glad that she was able to compete and reach her goals of doing more than she imagined she could. But she just didn’t have the grace and rythm.

And as for Max, I think it’s time he takes a break from the next few seasons…some of the professionals don’t dance each season, and with his temper, attitude and disrespect is not always showing his professional side. (always pinching or touching Tom Bergeron on the behind). Get some new faces. He thinks he’s GOd’s give towoman…he’s too conceded.

If anyone has paid attention to Dancing with the Stars over the last few seasons, you would be able to tell by the judges voting who they want to win from the first few weeks. Melissa wasn’t the best at the start but she got better each time and the last two weeks she was as good as Catherine. Catherine’s threesome was not as good as Melissa’s. The judges even admitted she made errors. The judges are still mad at Max and will probably always will be. What the producers need to do is change over the judges. Have maybe three sets of judges and each week there are different judges. It may just be more fai for all the dancers and maybe it will keep the leggy blondes away from Len. Cause that’s who he always votes for!

Maksim “more quiet and controlled with his temper”???? What a crock!!!His eye rolling and not looking at the judges speaks volumes of his arrogant character. He’s the dancer in a contest..NOT a judge. If you don’t like to be judged …GET OUT. Believe it or not Maksim there are scores of male dancers with your same talents but not your disgusting superiority complex. That would certainly be refreshing for the viewers!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Maks & his brother, Val. They are the best & make the show worth watching. Maks has a right to his opinion & to express them. I hope he doesn’t change and remains the strong & opinionated man he is….something very rare today.

Give me a break! She should have gone a couple of weeks ago, and he’s the biggest jerk on TV today. He should have been fired after he pushed his dancing partner last year. If he’s back next year, I’m not.

Melissa certainly was not the best dancer, but she tried hard. The judges were not kind in their comments, although they were with other no talent celebs whom they did not wish to belittle. Really not fair.

I like it when the ads don’t pop up and prevent me from reading the article. Those ads are very intrusive and don’t get positive results from me. The ads that are still and sit on the side are more visible to me and get more positive responses from me. Thank you Kraft Philadelphia. You’ve got class.

Melissa was very good but not great. I was pulling for her just because I’m a fan. Max is very strange but he is needed to keep the show interesting. The show needs the weekly drama and Max vs Len adds just the scripted color that the show needs.

Max should keep his mouth shut and in my opinion be let go off the show.

I am a big fan of DW the Stars, and have kept tract of how the judges critize the partner of Maks. It is obvious they don’t like him. He needs to take a break for Dancing with the Stars. Even though he is one of my favorites. He needs some down time.Things are beginning to get to him very easily and that tarnishes his professionalizm and performance.

It was not a polical campaign. It was time for Melissa to be eliminated, as it was for Roshon Fagan too.

Maybe if Max wasn’t so flexible, he wouldn’t put his foot in his mouth so often.

Next week will be very difficult, because there are four superb dancers left and only three can go on to the final. I look forward to seeing this, although the elimination show will be hard to watch.

Let’s face it, they did the same thing with Kirstie Alley. On Monday, not all the dancers that got 10′s deserved them. No one looked that perfect. I think the judges know just how low they have to go on the scores to get rid of someone no matter how many fan votes they get. Maybe Melissa was not the best dancer, but for me, she was the most entertaining. Some of the best dancers can be really boring. This show, for me, is more about entertainment, not a contest.

what I want to know is if they are going to see each other…they seemed ‘CLOSE” HE ALWAYS HAD HER IN AN EMBRACE SO TO SPEAK…HAD HIS ARMS WRAPPED AROUND HER, most of the time…and he said ” I love this woman”….?????

Melissa did not deserve to stay on DWTS. She was the weakest dancer left. From the very beginning Katherine, William, Maria and Dennis showed the could really dance.

Rubbish….the fans keep these stars in the game. When they have a fav like Gilbert, they vote 10 times for her. She wasn’t very good and I was surprised at how long she lasted. Were the judges in control, she would have been long gone. Melissa is just a very popular person and that’s why she was on til last night.

  19. LindaSDF Says:

It was past time for Melissa to go. I would really have liked to see Jaleel White go further than he did, but the four going into the semi-finals are the four I thought would be there. Any one of them could win.

  20. Joyce Says:

Maks is not wrong. The judges have a chip on thier shoulder against him. He is the best male dancer on the show. Derrick Huff is next in line for the best spot. Len Goodman should leave the show he is way to critcal against all the dancers. Love the show big time .

  21. Pat Says:
    May 9th, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Maks is completely correct. The show has disrespected him from the start and he DOES largely make the show. They just don’t like that he speaks his mind. He is very protective of his partners. He’s like a Papa Bear, he can growl at them, but not one else better. His protectiveness is one of his very best qualities. He’s passionate about his work & doesn’t give anything less than his best. He has remained friends with 10 of his 12 past partners & that says it all. What DWTS needs is new FAIR judges. I recommend Louis Van Amstel, Elena Grenkino(sp) & a third judge. If Maks is not on the show going forward, I suer won’t be watching.

  22. Faye Says:
    May 9th, 2012 at 4:40 pm

The judges absolutely have a grudge against Max and no matter who his partner is they are going to be judged harshly. The judges pick their favorites early on and they manipulate who they want to win by how they score them from week to week. It’s a big scam! Max is correct and I think he handles himself quite well all things considered. It’s a shame because Max is one of the best dancers on the show…If he quits dwts then I will stop watching!

i like Maks, he is a very good dancer. I like a man who speaks out for what he thinks is right. I watch the show every airing and i noticed that the judges always give Maks very low scores even if his performance is great. And i agree with someone who said , it is the judges who should be let go off the show not Maks. Without him, the rating for DWTS will plummet tremendously.

Having over 20 years of dance experience myself I think it was fair that Melissa was eliminated last night. I’m surprised she didn’t go home last week. She did improve since the beginning of this season, but still not up to par with the other remaining contestants.

  25. Bee Says:

Melissa should have gone home on week 2 and the fact that she got such good scores from judges shows, if anything, that they were politically motivated to KEEP her on. As if her dancing were equal to Katherine’s – ! Shame on them for being so “nice” to Melissa and for high scoring they give the men they think appeal most to the (mostly) female viewers.

It was past time for Melissa to leave. She had her run and then some. The week 7 dance was awkward and painful to watch. This week she did do better, but not enough to come anywhere close to being allowed to continue. Quite frankly, the judges were too generous too her with their scores this week. She still stumbled and obviously got lost a lot, which they downplayed compared to how harshly they judged others. America finally did the right thing by letting her go home.

Melissa did her best, but her best was not good enough. End of story. Maks is a legend “in his own mind”. I wish they would replace him as I am sick and tired of his antics. He turns this show into a “reality show” with his behavior. To be honest, I only try to catch a few dancers and change the channel when Maks is on.

I love Melissa gilbert. Maria and Derrick are great. I am not a fan of Catherine. Sorry but I think she is a major snob. And Donald and peta I’m in the middle with them. But I feel that the judges were harsh on Melissa. I felt that although she wasn’t the best at dancing and being a fan or not, I think she just isn’t the best dancer. However, I felt the judges were biased. Something was wrong and I didn’t know they had issues with maksim until I read this. I only started watching the show the past 2 years. But I feel melissas last 2 weeks were amazing. I felt she did well enough to carry through to the finals.Catherine handled that costume routine with class, yet I can promise if that were another contestant the judges would have rated them low. If you look at the faces of the judges when they comment on maksim and melissa you can see pissed off expressions. Melissa took it very well. I would have said a lot more. I am very impressed with melissa and Maria. Both women performing with injuries. That’s amazing. And I hope the judges get fired. Bruno can stay but the rest can go. Carrie and len ought to get married and run off together.

In my opinion, when making a comparison to how the judges scored others, Melissa should have gotten 9s for her waltz instead of 8s, and should have received higher scores for her Tango. In that sense, by being underscored, she came into Week-8 with an inaccurate image due to the judges … and … that is how the judges can manipulate viewer opinion. That sucks when they do that, along with presenting a negative pre-dance package. BTW, I thought Melissa’s 3-way dance with Maks and Val was awesome and should have gotten at least one 10, based on how others were scored. I thought her improvement in dancing from week 1 to week 8 was amazing. She looked so much more confident and in control. I wish Melissa and Maks were in the finals…

I am amazed she made it as long as she did. I applaud her efforts but it was defintely time for her to go. I don’t believe there is any conspiracy amongst the judges. The bottom line is she was just not good enough to remain in the competition.

It was soooooooo past time for Melissa to go. She was by far the worst diancer, awkward and stiff with every dance she did. Maks has an attitude that has gotten worse each year. He seems to think the show could not go on without him and I find him insufferable. I would be happy to see a season without him and his obsession with Tom Bergeron’s butt!!

lets face it the judges suck. they need to be changed out. what makes carrie ann a judge> she was a fly girl in the 80′s. all she does is gush over the big black sports guys. she is no authority and len needs to update a little, its not 1940. this show has the worst cast except for m.c. tom. brooke is one of the worse. start over with a new cast next year because you have lost me as a viewer. btw, the way you carried on over sherry leaving was plain stupid. fans didnt like her , they dont like her on the view they didnt like her there.

This is my first time for watching DWTS. I’ve always been otherwise occupied on Monday nights for 30+ years. I don’t think Melissa’s ouster was due to a political campaign by the judges. She clearly was not the best dancer, even though she showed improvement. However, based on my observations of the judges scoring, the final four are exactly how I guessed it would be weeks ago. The judges have definitely been biased in their scoring in a way that steered the competition to tonight’s semi-final show. It’s been a generally fun show to watch, but based on the biased scoring as I’ve assessed it, I probably won’t watch it again in the future.

Is Mak serious? I think his BS is just a ploy to keep up controversy, after all, even negative exporsure is exposure none the less. Frankly, I’m very surprised that she lasted as long as she did and IMO, it was because of Mak’s fan base, not Melissa’s. She had a hard time from the get go and to leave in 5th place is quite an accomplishment. People want to blame the judges but they forget that, in the end, it’s the viewer’s that decide. How many times have we seen mediocre dancers in the top 3 because of their fam base, like Bristol and Rob just to name 2.Sorry, but I believe that the four that are in the top deserve to be there more than Melissa ever did.

I have watched the show since season 1 and do love the show very much, let me say the 4 going into the finals should be there. as a host Brooke suxs, and should be let go. Now for Max…. he may be all of what everyone says he is but and its a big butt….he is one of the best around and he is getting screwed by the judges, this is a dance contest not a popularity contest and Max put his heart and soul into his dancing , and each week as he sees what the judges are doing it frustrates him, it would frustrate me too and does. Max and Cheryl are key elements to the show, but they are part of a team and bust their butts for the show. Maybe season 15 will show a change in judges , we can hope, a change in host ,say goodbye Brooke. I don’t want drama with the dancers but i do love the drama in the Dance can we put the drama where it belongs!!!!!!!

  37. Debi Says:

I have watched the show since the first season also… and I disagree with some of the comments above.

Brooke is not a bad host… she is only allowed 30 seconds on screen at any given time… the attention belongs on the dancers and unfortunately the judges.

I do feel the judges are really not acting very professional anymore. The hot and heavy sexual overtones from 2 of the judges is really crossing the line… I love the dancers this year and do believe that there is a lot of heat in the dancers…. as there should be in most of them… but the judges, especially Bruno, should hold their tongues about how the dancers (males) are oozing sex… a vertical dance with horizontal etc etc. I am so very sick of both of those 2 judges, and then there is Mr. Grouch himself… need I say more.

Max and Cheryl are both great dancers and give their all every season, but Max is out there creating bad press with his negative comments. I do not believe that the judges have it out for him… they praised him fairly well last yr with Kristy Alley except when she didn’t hold up her part on one or two of the dances. Max was just frustrated since he rarely gets a natural dancer, and sometimes, not a dancer at all. I like Melissa, but her fans kept her there as long as possible.

I hated when Glady’s was sent home also. The whole premise of this show is that the BEST of the BEST go to the finals. Melissa was not one of them.

Max needs to take at least one season off and go do something he loves.. He has spent way too much time teaching dance… and not dancing for the beauty of the dance anymore.
