America’s Got Talent on NBC premiered with their seventh season last night, and all eyes were on Howard Stern, the shock jock who was already criticized before the premiere even aired. Howard Stern did not disappoint last night, and in fact, he stole the show with his combination of heart and brutal honesty – not to mention comic relief! Read on for all the highlights!
“The executives at NBC must be out of their mind to take a risk on me,” Howard Stern joked at the start of the season 7 premiere of America’s Got Talent, and you could tell the audience was definitely anticipating judging his judging skills, which proved to be better than most expected. Howard Stern was a combination of sappy and completely honest, and he meshed very well with Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel. We also learned that Howard Stern has a fear of elevators as he nearly trampled an 80-year-old woman out of one when they almost got stuck – and Howie Mandel was not about to let him live that one down.
The show kicked off with a magician/male stripper, which completely shocked Howard Stern and disgusted Howie Mandel. The poor germ-a-phobe gave the so-called magician his ring before he knew the dude was going to strip and hang it from his nipple. Needless to say, he was buzzed off the stage, and Howard Stern made sure to tell him how “small” his package was, but assured the dude that he was in the same boat! As for Howie Mandel, well not surprisingly, he sent Nick take his ring away to be disinfected. When the bird lady hit the stage, Howard grilled her about whether or not she ate chicken and turkey, and if she enjoyed bird poop on her.
The comical insults and criticism continued when an awful singer took the stage, and then told the judges that his parents passed away. Howard’s response? Stern asked: “Did they die of embarrassment?” And Howard’s comical insults did not stop for the pretty ladies (sorry haters). When a scantily clad blonde bimbo took the stage with an awful singing/guitar combo, Howard told her to: “find a rich man and marry him,” pointing at Sharon Osbourne. Ozzy Osbourne then made an appearance on the stage before the judges buzzed the girl out.
More brutally honest criticism from Howard Stern included: “That was more gross-out than a million dollar act,” when a scary group of circus performers took the stage to poke metal rods in their mouths, and “I drained the show of so much of their budget that we could not afford real pumpkins,” when a pumpkin carver took the stage using a fake pumpkin. Yes, the auditions proved to be full of those people who obviously never got a second opinion on their so called “talent.”
But, there were some high moments during the auditions. We watched William, who created a super-sized musical instrument with strings going from the stage to the balcony – and then he amazed us when he played it! We saw our share of dancers, but to be honest, I am a little tired of the dance acts – they don’t seem to stick out anymore. We did see a new take on the light dancers though, with Light Wire Theater, who were similar to iLuminate from last season, but with more detail. The group light up the stage with dinosaurs and flowers, and left Howard Stern gushing about what a great country America is.
Other impressive acts included a little girl who took on aerial silks, a ventriloquist with a dog, and two sensational father/daughter singing acts, as well as a rapper, who came prepared with his very own rap about America’s Got Talent and Howard Stern, um, can you say suck up? Yes, he was good though. We also watched Howard Stern show his heart as he gave Simply Sergio, a ridiculous singing/dancing dude a second chance to perform. Sergio took on an Opera version of God Bless America, and it left us wondering if the guy’s twin brother just swapped the stage with him. It was great, and earned him a cuddle from Howard Stern!
