Celebrity fashion designs, a six million dollar contract on the line and a title no other designer can claim–it’s time for the finale of Fashion Star! In its first season on NBC, the reality TV competition began with 14 aspiring designers but now only three have survived the challenging journey and tonight one will be selected as the winner. Who will be crowned the first Fashion Star ever–keep reading to find out!
The show opens with a fashion show by Jessica Simpson. Her Spring 2012 collection graces the runway with lots of bright colors. The final three designers are Ronnie Escalante, Nzimiro Oputa and Kara Laricks. Tonight, the final three designers must create nine looks in total–three for Macy’s, three for H&M and three for Saks Fifth Avenue. This is the toughest assignment, one that can make or break the designers’ chance of winning the competition. Taking direction from the buyers and the mentors, the fashion designers turn out their most creative looks.
Host Elle Macpherson announces that the creations seen tonight will be sold in the three stores and on-line. The three mentors are Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos. The buyers are Nicole Christie from H&M, Terron Schaefer from Saks Fifth Avenue and Caprice Willard from Macy’s.
38-year old Kara from New York has had quite a roller-coaster ride on the first season of Fashion Star. As a former teacher, Kara is hoping that her leap of faith into the fashion world will show her former students that they can do anything they set their minds to. Her designs have been very unique and eccentric. Tonight Terron Schaefer from Saks Fifth Avenue says in-terms of fashion she is a leader not a follower. Among her looks tonight is a black dress, white suit and cropped pants paired with a sleeveless colored shirt.
28-year old Nzimiro is an engineer by day and designer by night. He designs preppy yet fun looks and has been complimented for his tailoring this season. He has also impressed the mentors and judges with his designs for women. Tonight, he showcased a men’s sweater, collared shirts, pants, short sleeve shirts and shorts. Terron Schaefer from Saks Fifth Avenue says Nzimiro’s collection for Saks is truly a wardrobe for a beach weekend. All season-long Nzimiro and Nicole Riche have had a special bond. Elle joked with Nzimiro’s family in the audience asking if they’ve met Nzimiro’s girlfriend Nicole Richie. Right after, Jessica Simpson asks Nzimiro about his nude colored scarf to which–even under pressure–he still playfully answers, “These are Nicole’s pantyhose!” Everyone starts laughing and the hysterical moment is a nice break from the tension that’s building leading up to the announcement of the winner!
Elegant and sophisticated–are the words that have been used to describe Ronnie’s designs all season long and tonight was no different. The 34-year old showcased his collections that are classic pieces in every woman’s wardrobe with modern accents. He sent dresses, a tan suit, white suit and a three-quarter black dress with a pattern in the middle down the runway. Mentor Jessica Simpson said his high slit red and black dress is a standout.
After the show, the buyers and mentors meet backstage to deliberate. They reiterate that all three designers are very talented but need to find the one who stands out the most and can design for all three stores. On-stage the designers line up and anxiously await their fate. At the same time all of the buyers–Terron, Caprice and Nicole announce who the first Fashion Star is Kara Laricks!
