We’ll admit that we were a little bummed when we heard that Lionel Richie wouldn’t be joining Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, and Robin Thicke for ABC’s new singing competition, Duets. But when the network announced that award-winning singer/songwriter John Legend would be taking his place, well…we quickly got over it. And apparently, John’s as excited about being on the show as we are to see him there. (Okay, maybe we’re a little more excited.)
“It sounded fun like a fun thing to do,” Legend tells reporters of his latest gig. “I love looking at new talent and nurturing new talent and mentoring new talent and this seemed like a perfect thing for me to do.”
Unlike other reality singing competitions, in Duets, the coaches are also a part of the game, which is another thing that drew Legend to the project.
“That’s the cool thing that makes it different from the other shows,” says the “Greenlight” singer. “We sing with them, we coach them, we mentor them and it’s been a lot of fun so far.”
But for the contestants, the opportunity to perform with such accomplished superstars can at times be a little daunting, as Legend’s co-star/competitor, Robin Thicke explains.
“Sometimes they rely on us to protect them and other times they [are] getting a little freaked out when you get a little close,” says Thicke. “They’re like, ‘Ah, John Legend is singing in my face!’ That’s the fun of it; it’s an unpredictable performance each time and you get to include these wonderful voices and incredible talents.”
“They benefit from our advice and our counsel, but I think they also are a little intimidated that they have to sing with us onstage,” adds John.
We can’t wait to see how they do!
The 2-hour season premiere of Duets airs Thursday, May 24 on ABC at 8|7c. Will you be tuning in?
