Dancing With The Stars Recap: Bum Envy? The Quest For a ’10 From Len’

May 21, 2012 06:03 PM by Candace Young

Perhaps the most competitive season ever of Dancing With The Stars culminates in tonight’s performances of the final three couples. Last week, Maria Menounos and Derek Hough left the competition after topping the leaderboard. Keep reading for tonight’s highlights…

Cheryl Burke tells William Levy one of the judges is coming in to help in rehearsal – naturally it’s Bruno, who salivates over William on a regular basis! William and Cheryl are dancing the cha cha cha tonight. Cheryl’s colorful dress looks like a clown got sick on it, and the music is the worst version of a Pink song I’ve ever heard…but the dancing is amazing! Len and Bruno rave over William’s cha cha cha and his placement. Carrie Ann says he’s grown miles and that’s what matters! All three judges award ’10′s! It’s a ‘30‘!

Katherine Jenkins is really hoping for a ’10 from Len’ after he gives advice in her rehearsal with Mark Ballas. Katherine and Mark dance the pasa doble in dramatic black velvet costumes with vivid red and gold accents – luscious! Their routine is theatrical and sharp. Bruno hisses about technical brilliance, Carrie Ann calls her the prima diva, and Len pronounces it fabulous! Yes! She gets her ’10 from Len’, as well as from the others – ‘30‘!

That makes Donald Driver the only remaining contestant who hasn’t yet got a ’10 from Len’ – will he do it tonight with the help of Carrie Ann in rehearsal? Donald and Peta are performing the Argentine tango. Dressed in gorgeous midnight blue, the pair execute a stunning, controlled routine! Carrie Ann comments on the crispness, Len has plenty good to say, but earns ‘boos’ for calling it a bit careful. Bruno enthuses about the effective storytelling. Donald gets ’10′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno – but still only a ’9′ from Len! It’s ‘29‘!

Some say the freestyle makes or breaks the quest for the Mirrorball Trophy. William and Cheryl are up first.  Their dance is wild right from the start! Cheryl’s dress is again a bit of a distraction – this time bringing to mind a lampshade in a brothel, but nevermind, the dance was hot and sexy with a definite Latin salsa flavor and tons of lifts! Len wanted to see something different. Bruno raves, and Carrie Ann say it is what freestyle is about – breaking new ground – but Len interjects, “Breaking old ground!” It’s ’10′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and a ’9′ from tough nut, Len. ‘29‘! Tom Bergeron accuses Len of ‘bum envy’!

Katherine looks like a rag doll being dragged around by Mark in practice. It’s cute! On the floor, she starts out singing and then they launch into an energetic Lindy hop! It’s not her usual feminine graceful style, but it’s fun and feisty – even comical at moments. Bruno and Carrie Ann rave about the content and how she hit it all the way through. Len also loved it.  It’s enough for another ’10 from Len’, and the others – ‘30‘!

Donald tells Peta he wants to surprise everyone by dancing to country music in the freestyle. Cowboy Troy sings I Play Chicken With a Train as Donald and Peta strut their country stuff in horrible green, yellow, and brown costumes. They do some absolutely incredible lifts and spinning lifts – gasping here! The crowd explodes! Carrie Ann hollers that this is by far her favorite! Len enthuses that chances win dances! Bruno cannot resist a ride in the wild, wild west! The scores are in…will Donald get his ’10 from Len’? He does!! Finally! Carrie Ann and Bruno give ’10′s as well – it’s ‘30‘!

Fun night! Kelly Clarkson performs tomorrow night!
