Duets Recap: Is This Show Too Hot For TV?!

May 24, 2012 08:11 PM by Shayla Perry

It’s time to Duet! And after finally seeing tonight’s premiere of ABC‘s new reality singing competition, we’re starting to think that the pun was definitely intended on this one. Between Robin Thicke and John Legend‘s steamy performances of their most sultry hits, to the chemistry between the duet partners — and of course, Robin’s apparent love for himself (who can blame him?!)… Parental Advisory is strongly advised!

We’re pretty sure that Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Nettles were on ABC’s new reality competition, Duets, but it seems that the two were overshadowed by their co-stars, Robin Thicke and John Legend, who were on a mission to bring the sexy back to primetime TV.

Consider it brought!

Here’s what you missed in tonight’s premiere; minus most of the thrusting, winking, and Robin Thicke flirting with anything with a pulse.

After a performance from all four coaches, each of the superstars took to the stage not once, but twice, with the two amateurs that they hand-selected in a nationwide search.

Jennifer and her first amateur, J Rome were first, performing her hit, “Tonight.”

Throughout the competition, the amateurs’ performances are rated by the other three coaches, giving them a cumulative score, much like the leader board on Dancing With The Stars.

Based on his performance and presentation (and the fact that he was first), J Rome earned the top spot on the Duet chart…but can he hold onto his position?

John Legend is next to debut his amateur – Johnny Gray, singing”Ordinary People.” So far, this duet is our not-so-secret fave, but their performance isn’t enough to take the #1 position.

Robin Thicke and Olivia Chisholm groove to his “Lost Without You,” reminding us of how sexy that song is (love it!), and making us feel a little awkward — like we just walked in on them making out.

It’s another good performance, but it only gets Olivia to the 3rd spot on the board. We’re starting to see a trend here, because… Yup, Kelly Clarkson’s duet to “Breaking Your Own Heart” with  Jason Farol gets fourth.

But, with four new amateurs, things finally start to get shaken up.

John Legend and Bridget Carrington make us blush with “Tonight (Best You’ve Ever Had),” bumping Jason Farol for the 4th place spot.

Then, Jennifer takes the stage again with another Georgia native, John Glosson singing “Stay,” bringing Kelly Clarkson to tears and earning him the 3rd spot on the chart. But they quickly lose that position to Robin’s  Alexis Foster who performs “Magic.”

Now we have a competition!

Unfortunately, at the end of the night, Kelly Clarkson’s not doing too well in it, with her duet with  Jordan Meredith (who, btw sounded EXACTLY like her), only reaching the 7th spot, above her other amateur, who’s in last place.

Maybe Robin will make it better with more of his bedroom eyes.

something has to change! Johnny should not have been in 2nd this was arelly boring performance. I smiled the entire time JRome sang, hes terrifica. Olivia should be third… Not enough credit given there. Watch it again. All the John Legend one’s were boring.

Like the show, especially the 4 pros. But I don’t like the way they are scoring the performers. A secret vote between 1 and 100?? How do they no one judge isn’t gonna give everyone an average score 20 points higher or lower than the next judge?

@Carree: I agree that John’s amateur’s came across as a little boring, but that’s because as great as his songs are, they’re pretty subdued in general. I think that’s where the producers went wrong with the premiere. Maybe do the coaches biggest hits on episode 2 or 3, but not on the first episode; especially when there’s only like 2 upbeat songs out of 8. Not a very good first impression. Olivia was good. Robin’s going to have to tone it down a notch to let her really shine though.

JOHN GLOSSON and JEN NETTLES stole the show with STAY and it bafuls my mind how he didn’t end up number 1. Not sure the celebrities judging each other is working out to the best for anyone. We’ll see next week if it’ll get better.

Started to watch the premier, but lost interest after about 20 minutes. I just couldn’t stand the 4 coaches continually referred to as the “superstars”. Like their egos aren’t already big enough!! Call them the coaches, judges, mentors, whatever, but lose the constant “superstars”.

Will we get a chance to vote? Judges could be voting to keep their guys up.

John and Jennifter were super. I thought Jordan and Kelly were great. The scoring is wrong. Of course the other judges are NOT going to give a better score to another singer. So they low ball their competiton

I love the show. I do not watch Idol. Loved John Legend.

I didn’t like this show at all. First – it makes no sense for the judges (who want to win) to be judging the other competitors. A dumb concept. Second, “The Voice” was so much better. It showed how the coaches helped to improve the singers. Here, the singers just came out and sang. We never saw any coaching going on. And third, Robin Thicke mugged his way through the show. He was embarassing to watch. His love affair with himself has no limits. He reminds me of a younger Donald Trump. I plan to pass on this show. Not worth the time.

The lack of transparency in the scoring make this show a joke. It is fine that the audience does not have a vote, but when you see the how the rankings are and the fact that one judge could determine the outcome by voting very low for a good contestant makes this a competition that is worthless.

I turned it off after the first hour. Very boring…I would be surprised if it makes it to the end of its run – how ever long that will be. And no, it’s not too hot for TV…maybe too boring for TV. Too bad, really…I like K. Clarkson.

Some of you obviously aren’t singers for a reason. That dude Johnny Gray has pipe and range 4 days. If I want to set the mood I’m playing Johnny Gray. I know y’all not hating on The Legend. Carree you are right Johnny Gray shouldn’t be 2nd he should be 1st. Ever heard of Luther.

I was really looking forward to this show. The concept sounded awesome. However, it really disappointed me. I enjoyed all of the judges, especially Kelly Clarksson. However, only Jennifer Nettles two singers blew me away. All of the others, were just so-so. I will tune in again, but if it does not improve, this will be the last time. Fingers are crossed, they can make it better. One thing I found is that everyone, with the exception of Jennifer Nettles did not choose the best contestant. This is especially true for Kelly Clarkson. Such a disappointment out the gate for a new show.

The leader deserves to be first! Jennifer Nettles chose two great people. Love the loyalty to 4-H and Clovers and Company! Thicke needs to stop flirting with everyone, male or female! Be discrete!

The show could grow, I really think the other “Judges” have been very unfair to Kelly Clarkson. Actually I think the guys are ganging up on Kelly and Jennifer? The way the scoring is done should be changed, it isn’t fair. The “Judge” could fix it so they can score lower so that their duet partner can stay on top. Robin Thicke, please get over yourself. I stopped watching Idol because of the Judges, Love the Voice since it’s about the voice rather than the way they look. America’s Got Talent is very entertaining since the Judges and Host get involved. The host on “Duet’s” is dry, maybe find someone better.
