Last night, after a groundbreaking number of votes, Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner of American Idol season 11. Call it a curse, call it a coincidence, or call it America knows what it likes, but another guy with a guitar wins American Idol. Phillip Phillips is the fifth guy with a guitar in a row to win American Idol. A female hasn’t won American Idol since 2007, when Jordin Sparks took the title.
We met Phillip Phillips in Savannah, Georgia. He first sang “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, sans guitar. Then, the judges asked Phillip Phillips to get his groove on with the guitar. Phillip Phillips hypnotized the nation with an original version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Phillip Phillips and his guitar went on to dominate the entire season.
David Cook started the guy with a guitar phenomenon after winning season seven in 2008. David Cook impressed the American Idol audience with his musicality and obscure song choices. The next season, Kris Allen won. Lee DeWyze, paint store clerk,
wowed America was lucky enough to show up with a guitar and not suck as much as Tim Urban did. Inexplicably, he beat out Crystal Bowersox and won season nine. Last year, Scott McCreery, the country version of guy with a guitar, took the title.
This season, many believed Jessica Sanchez would break the curse. Phillip Phillips and his guitar proved them wrong. No female winner this year, but, let’s all take a minute to thank Jordin Sparks for being the powerhouse that she is and winning when she did in season six. Season five’s winner, Taylor Hicks, was the guy with a harmonica. And a soul patrol. Thankfully, Jordin stopped that train dead in its tracks.
Phillip’s debut song is “Home.”
