Season 9 of FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance showed that it is back with a vengeance when it premiered on Thursday night. It took the top spot with the 18-49 year old demographic. The first episode showed the entertaining auditions that were held in both New York and Texas. The featured auditions focused less on the typical hip hop performances from seasons past. Instead, viewers were shown some more eclectic dancing displays, such as the highlight of the night Texan Hampton Williams, who showcased his own dance that he called “exorcist style.”
But the series premiere of ABC’s Duets, a new singing competition, definitely didn’t fare badly either. Overall Duets had more than half a million more viewers than So You Think You Can Dance. In the end, they both won in certain categories and therefore the competition between them is extremely close. This could be a close race throughout the summer for these two shows. Duets has the fact that it’s a new show on its side, while So You Think You Can Dance has proven itself season after season.
Duets also has some new star power with Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Nettles, and John Legend as its superstar cast. The chosen duet partners have the opportunity to actually sing with the stars, which adds a new twist to the tried and true singing competition. Both shows come on every Thursday night in the same time slot. Let’s watch out for this summer’s competition on and off the television!
