American Idol’s Phillip Phillips Sets Record, Surgery Postponed

May 31, 2012 03:00 PM by Melissa Stavarski

American Idol winner Phillip Phillips‘ single “Home” reached No. 2 on the Digital Songs chart this week with 278,000 downloads. That’s the highest Idol debut ever.  Phillip, 21, suffers from severe kidney stones. Phillip endured eight surgeries throughout the competition and was supposed to have another surgery last Tuesday.  TMZ reports the surgery had to be postponed because Phillip was running a high fever as a result of a bad sinus infection.  Phillip Phillips‘ surgery is rescheduled for early next week.  Read on for more.

In addition to the highest debut ever, “Home” is the second highest digital sales week for an American Idol contestant, with only Kelly Clarkson‘s “My Life Would Suck Without You” ahead of “Home.”

Phillips’ single is also the fourth-largest debut of the year, trailing behind Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend, ” Maroon 5′s “Payphone,” and Katy Perry’s “Part of Me.”  Considering Phillip Phillips was playing Sanford and Son with his father just a few months ago, that’s quite impressive compared to those big names. Bieber! Levine!

Despite the health challenges and the “white guy with a guitar” stigma surrounding him, Phillip’s post-Idol career is off to a remarkable start.

But does he have the staying power?  Will Phillip Phillips move into the American Idol hall of fame with the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Chris Daughtry?  What do you think?
