How Kelly Clarkson Could Be Hurting Her ‘Duets’ Partners’ Chances of Winning (And It’s Not The Reason You Think!)

June 02, 2012 10:21 AM by Shayla Perry

Her fellow “superstars,” John Legend and Robin Thicke, have said that her amateurs rely on her too much throughout their performances, and she’s admitted that they definitely have less experience. But we believe there’s something else keeping Kelly Clarkson‘s Duets partners – Jordan Meredith and Jason Farol – from the top of the leader board each week. And yes, Kelly’s still to blame.

Despite their undeniable talent, Jordan Meredith and Jason Farol have yet to get very high on the leader board on ABC‘s new singing competition, Duets (unless you count Jordan’s 2nd place spot last week, which she only got because she was the second performer).

While some may say that the other contestants are just THAT much more polished, or that both Jason and Jordan rely on Kelly a little too much while on stage (which is probably true), we think there’s something else going on that could cost them the competition.

With the “secret scoring” used on the show, we don’t get to see how each judge is actually allotting points. And with a range of 1-100, well, that leaves a lot of room for flexibility; perhaps too much flexibility.

It can be assumed that the American Idol alum has been giving out more points than the other judges, in general. But because they’re unable to benefit from her generous scoring, Jason and Jordan may not make it very far.

What do you think RTVM: Do you think the scoring on ABC’s Duets is fair? How would you change it? Sound off in the Comments section below.

I’ve been saying this for a while, they either need to fix the voting issue or Kelly needs to be more critical in grading.

absolutely right !! that is exactly what i figured was happening. Kelly, being so generous has given high marks, but the others, and nobody knowing how they are scoring … are marking lower … and that is the catch 22 – get a new way of scoring – this is not cutting it … ps love kelly

I agree with the theory that Kelly is generous with her scoring.

I think some of the other judges are secretly padding their own performers, while knocking the competition. If Kelly is not doing this, then her duet partners will be the only ones effected.

Maybe the format of the show should calculate downloads into the ratings… then her singing prowess and popularity would help her team and her generosity would not hurt them as much.

What else, the judges all have nice comments to make when the cameras are rolling…but clearly they are not taking those sentiments to heart when it comes time to allot points in the voting. Kinda lame – gotta be honest. But KC catches on quick, she’ll make the adjustments.

I noticed one of the first adjustments was that she was – ever honest and candid – a lot more harsh in her candid critiques… and I bet her voting reflected this, at least to some degree.

We’ll see what happens with the show.

I think the problem lies with Kelly too, but for different reasons. Her voice and tone are so incredible, her partners sound so mundane in comparison. I bet if you put her partners with one of the other stars, they’d be fine. NO ONE can hold a candle to Kelly’s voice, and I think they’re suffering because of it. And she’s even been holding back some to let them shine, and she still makes them look weak.

I agree with this article and I dont think the scoring is fair at all… I’ve met Kelly SEVERAL times in person and shes one of the NICEST, SWEETEST people ever!

I think this logic is true and shes giving out more points than the other judges.

    Four judges = Four scores

Take the highest and lowest score out.
Add the remainder 2 scores together and
divide the sum by 2. That is the contestant’s score.
