Glee may be over but The Glee Project is offering a sneak peek into what fans might see in the fall. The pressure is on for the contenders on season two of The Glee Project on Oxygen. Tonight they will be performing for Glee creator Ryan Murphy and its star Lea Michele! The 14 contestants must dance and sing their way onto the Glee set. Most of them haven’t had a lot of professional experience and each week must learn the lyrics to songs, work on their vocal delivery and learn choreography! Keep reading to meet the contestants!
This season the cast is very diverse including a contestant who is blind, one who is paralyzed from the chest down and another who has severe ADHD and low-spectral autism which reinforces the Glee theme of encouraging everyone to follow their dreams. The 14 hopefuls include Abraham, Ali, Aylin, Blake, Charlie, Dani, Lily, Mae, Mario, Maxfield, Michael, Nellie, Shanna, Taryn and Tyler.
All are vying for the grand prize–a seven episode arc on Glee and they waste no time getting started. Casting Director Robert Ulrich announces their homework assignment is to sing and perform Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” While trying to decide who will sing which part Aylin says she doesn’t understand why everyone is being so nice after all it is a competition!
Ready to perform for their guest mentors the contestants are excited when Ryan Murphy walks in and absolutely shocked when Lea Michele follows! The contenders perform the Lady Gaga jam and the tears begin when Lea tells Lily that she is “strikingly beautiful.” Lea picks Shanna as the winner of the homework assignment so she gets a one-on-one lesson with Lea.
The mentors are Robert Ulrich, Zach Woodlee and Nikki Anders. During choreography lessons, Zach and his team work with Mario who is blind by allowing him to feel how their arms and legs move so he can learn the moves.
This week, their music video will be “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake. The idea is to film them in the cafeteria and then cut to them rocking out on-stage. After observing all of them the mentors say they would have liked to have seen more from Aylin, Tyler and Maxfield who are now in the bottom three.
They move on to the last chance performance with Alyin singing David Guetta’s “Without You;” Tyler sings “ABC” by The Jackson 5 and Maxfield sings the country hit “Always On My Mind.”
Ultimately, Ryan Murphy says he’s not sure Maxfield and Tyler are what he’s looking for to play a character on Glee. One-by one the contestants in jeopardy of elimination walk to the call back sheet and unfortunately, Maxfield is not called back and therefore is the first to be eliminated this season.
