“Masterchef” kicks into full gear this evening as Gordon Ramsay, et al, wrap up auditions and the contestants are selected to compete for the $250,000 grand prize, a cookbook of his or her own recipes and, lest we forget, the claim to the winning apron. How did they fare with their gourmet faire? Let’s find out…
The top 36 contestants hope to make it to the top 18 and into the MasterChef Kitchen where the real competition begins.
Stacey creates a New York Strip Steak Espresso Crust with Chimichurri Sauce. Chef Ramsay says the plate doesn’t have a lot going for it and gives a no. Graham is a yes. Initially, Joe can’t reward the plate, so he says no. In an unusual move, they all re-try it when she leaves. Joe changes his vote and she gets an apron.
Rami, a car salesman from Texas, makes Scallops Florentine over Roasted Red Pepper and Sweet Potato Puree. Joe thinks Rami may be a one-hit wonder, so he is a no. Graham is a yes. Chef Ramsay gives him an apron, saying his scallops were perfection.
David makes Pescado with Poblano Atole. David breaks down and starts crying. He wants to show that good things come from bad neighborhoods like where he’s from. Joe says yes, Graham says yes and so does Ramsay. David is the last cook to get an apron.
Now the cooks come up against their first MasterChef challenge. 50% of them won’t make it out. The challenge is cooking up ground beef with items in the pantry behind them. They have 60 minutes.
The judges make their rounds while the cooks are creating, making notes of who’s up to what. When the 60 minutes are up, they divvy up the contestants into three groups. They summon two groups. One group has impressed the judges so they will go straight to the Top 18. The other group is clearly there by mistake and they will be going home. The winning group includes Stacey, who had her food re-tasted and Josh, the 7-foot tall guy from last week. The loser group includes Joel, the soldier. Poor Joe, probably literally. He was trying to open a restaurant off this.
The final group gets called with their dishes. They single out David, who made Italian Beef Taco with Eggplant and Bolognese Sauce. Ramsay said he could have done something more with it. Anna made Beef Stuffed Onions with Raisins, Toasted Walnuts and Horseradish Crème. Ramsay says it works, but needs more color. The husband and wife are up next, albeit with separate dishes for qualifiers. A.J. made Orecchiette Pasta with Broccoli Rabe and Fennel Meatballs. Graham says he did a good job. Tanya made a Persian Kebab with Red Onion Pickle Salad and Fried Eggplant. Chef Ramsay said it was bold.
David and Tanya are both going on to the MasterChef Kitchen. The husband/wife are up next and one is going home. It’s A.J. Anna gets to go to the MasterChef Kitchen.
The next groups of four step up. Some of the dishes include: Thai Basil Beef with Rice, Ranch Stew with Corn Bread Topping, Beef & Spinach Curry with Israeli Couscous and Potatoes, Beef Roll with Greens and Almonds, Spaghetti Bolognese, Grape Leaf Patty with Cucumber Yogurt and Pickled Vegetables, and Roasted Eggplant stuffed with Garlic mash and Beef with a Tomato Butter Sauce. Of the more interesting contestants from last week, Christine, the blind woman makes it into the top 18.
