Too Far: Should TLC Have Pulled ‘Cake Boss’ Episode For Its Homophobic Scene?

June 14, 2012 11:02 AM by Shayla Perry

If you missed Monday’s Cake Boss, it’s going to be a while before you catch it. That is, if the network decides to air it again! TLC has pulled the episode from rotation after a “homophobic prank” left RuPaul’s Drag Race star Carmen Carrera UP-SET. So what happened?

In the episode, “Cousin Anthony” Bellifemine was doing a little flirting with Carmen, which led her to give him a kiss on the cheek.

“Anthony, right now, is top of the world,” Cake Boss Buddy Valastro says in a voice-over. “He don’t know what’s coming, baby.”

Buddy then tells Cousin Anthony, “That’s a man, baby!” before running out of the room.

“I’m really trying to be a positive role model for trans people and it upsets me that … I SPECIFICALLY asked the producers of ‘Cake Boss’ NOT to disrespect me or trans people,” Carrera wrote on her Facebook page after seeing the episode.

“Before I agreed to do this show, I was assured and then reassured that it wasn’t going to be like the JERRY SPRINGER show or MAURY,” she explains, adding, “Let me make this clear. CALLING A TRANSGENDER WOMAN A MAN IS WRONG. Period. It’s degrading, it’s rude, and it’s very hurtful.”

A producer of the show and the Cake Boss himself later apologized to Carmen and the entire LGBT community for the “use of words,” with the network doing its part and removing the episode from rotation altogether…for now, confirming that they are “reviewing the content to see whether it could be reintroduced following edits.”

Where do you stand on the issue? Did you find the “prank” harmless or hurtful? Did TLC do the right thing by temporarily removing the episode from rotation so it can be edited, or is it too little, too late now that the damage has already been done? Sound off in the Comments section below.
