Rodney King, who became famous after being beaten by LAPD officers in 1991, has died at 47. Rodney King appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and Sober House, both on VH1. The series is currently on hold at VH1. Perhaps the network feels airing wives’ drama, with Basketball Wives and Mob Wives, less of a risk than airing celebrities’ struggles with substance abuse? Continue reading for the sad details surrounding King’s death.
Rodney King, whose public beating in 1991 sparked the LA Riots, had been in and out of rehab centers because of addictions to both drugs and alcohol. King appeared on Celebrity Rehab in 2008.
E! News reports that King’s fiance, Cynthia Kelly, found his body at the bottom of their pool in California shortly after 5 a.m. this morning. Physicians at the local hospital pronounced King dead at 6:11 a.m.
King is the third celebrity who appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew to die since March 2011. Actor Jeff Conaway, who appeared on season two, died in May 2011 of pneumonia and, according to hospital records, he was admitted with symptoms of a prescription-drug overdose. Also, Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr died in March 2011 from a lethal combination of Xanax and alcohol.
Our thoughts go out to Rodney King’s friends and family during this difficult time.
