Cee Lo Green Draws Ire From Animal Group Over New Cockatoo

June 25, 2012 11:00 AM by Stephanie Gustafson

Cee Lo Green is excited to show off his new cockatoo on The Voice, but if animal group Born Free has its way, viewers will not be seeing Lady the pink cockatoo on The Voice’s judging panel any time soon. Why is Born Free upset? Keep reading to find out!

Last week, singer and Voice judge Cee Lo Green showed off a brand new cockatoo named Lady. During filming of The Voice, Lady perched on Cee Lo’s shoulder, whispering, as Cee Lo puts it, “inappropriateness” in her owner’s ear. While Cee Lo Green was pumped about having a new animal friend on set, animal organization Born Free was not as enthused.

Born Free rep Monica Engrebretson explained to TMZ that, while cockatoos are both beautiful and intelligent, they are not always the best choice for pets, especially as they are “prone to considerable welfare problems.” Engrebretson added, “Many Moluccan cockatoos develop self-destructive behavior including feather plucking and self mutilation not known to occur in the wild.”

Engrebretson and the rest of her cohorts at Born Free worry that, if featured on The Voice, Moluccan cockatoos could quickly be in high demand at pet stores. This, in turn, would lead to already overcrowded parrot rescues being forced to take on more birds than they are equipped to care for. Engrebretson suggest that, instead, The Voice feature “a more appropriate companion animal such as a dog. Even better, they could feature a rescue dog or a dog in need of a home.”

A  cat is a pretty traditional companion animal. Maybe there’s hope for Cee Lo’s original feline friend Purrfect after all!
