Interview With MasterChef Castoff: Helene Sounds Off
June 25, 2012 12:50 PM by Gina Hall
MasterChef candidate, Helene, didn’t know if the MasterChef judges, including Gordon Ramsay, would embrace her non-traditional style. What did she have to say about the whole MasterChef experience?
“I was at the beach, surfing, and my girlfriends started telling me I’d be a perfect candidate for MasterChef,” said Helene in an interview with Reality TV Magazine. “I was really into healthy, raw foods, so I wasn’t sure if that would be appropriate for MasterChef, but I tucked it away in the back of my mind.” Did she have what it took to face Gordon Ramsay?
“When the first auditions came to Washington, D.C, I auditioned with my raw, vegan organic fudge and I made it!” But would her healthy cooking impress the MasterChef judges who tend to go for hearty over healthy?
At the audition, “I didn’t know what to expect,” Helene said. “Gordon Ramsay didn’t think my cuisine was MasterChef, but they other two liked it. They called it spa cuisine.”
So it was especially difficult for her first challenge to do something within her philosophy with ground beef. “The best thing I could do was take out the fat and not combine it with a starch.”
She also excelled at the Marine challenge. “I was honored to be chosen so early. I was put on cole slaw and it kind of saved the day.”
Helene has plans for the near future, she has a raw chocolate shop and is working on a book about healthy snacks for children. She also maintains a blog at heleneskitchen.com.
