Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the field was whittled down to just 35 dancers. Tonight, the Top Twenty will be revealed and will dance live on stage! New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel joins the panel as a special guest. Keep reading for highlights…
Cat Deeley kicks things off by announcing that it’s So You Think You Can Dance‘s 200th episode! Zooey Deschanel of New Girl joins Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe on the panel. Nigel talks about how this season they will choose America’s Favorite Girl, and America’s Favorite Guy. Cat says the judges looked at the tapes and made their selections for the Top Ten girls and Top Ten guys…the others must now be cut. Eek.
Alexa, who struggled with showing appropriate emotion in her Las Vegas dances, is the first to be put through. More than just a pretty face!
Jorge, who faces the judges in a adorably geeky button up shirt and bowtie, is the first guy to be put through to the Top Twenty.
Amber, who was cut in Season 6, and Will, are also put through.
The foursome do a contemporary dance to We Found Love (In a Hopeless Place).
Nick, a ballroom dancer, starts crying when he gets in front of the panel, but they tell him he made the Top Twenty – so stop crying! Ah, the pressure!
Whitney and Lindsay, aka Team Ballroom, face the judges together. Mary tells them they’re looking for one ballroom girl, but they adore both of them! Whitney is told she’s in the Top Twenty. They lead Lindsay on for a minute before telling her she’s made it as well. Psych!
The trio perform a ballroom number to I Wanna Dance by Jennifer Lopez.
Eliana, a classically-trained dancer who really impressed Mary, meets the judges in blue suede shoes, and is told her blue suede shoes are meant for walking – into the Top Twenty!
Daniel, of the San Francisco Ballet, and Kyon, who was startling good in his solo, are sent to the judges together. Daniel is asked to be in the Top Twenty. Nigel then tells Kyon he is in as well! Gotcha!
The three dancers perform a ballet with a contemporary/progressive edge wearing silver costumes.
Tiffany, a jazz dancer, is ready to learn her fate. The panel talks about how she was like a great race horse who pulled up from the rear despite being nearly invisible in the beginning. She’s in the Top Twenty!
Audrey, also a jazz dancer, gets the nod from the panel. This chick is so down-to-earth; she goes right to call her mom!
Four other jazz girls are let go, including Kaitlyn, who was also cut last year.
Janelle becomes the first belly dancer to make the Top Twenty on So You Think You Can Dance.
Cat announces that Janelle is ill, so Audrey and Tiffany dance together on stage.
After four more cuts, it’s down to seven spots and twelve dancers.
The guy who looks like Ryan Gosling, Matthew, makes it into the Top Twenty.
Darien, whom the judges call a ‘powerhouse’, is also welcomed into the Top Twenty.
Janaya, who has found the show to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, goes in to see the judges.
Amelia, the silent movie inspired dancer, and Jill, of the long gorgeous hair, are waiting to see what happens with Janaya as there are only two spots left for girls. When Janaya comes out screeching with happiness, they realize only one of them can make it.
Amelia and Jill face the judges together. The panel tells them they are looking for star power – Amelia’s in the Top Twenty!
The foursome perform a stirring routine with a lot of impressive lifts.
The remaining guys’ spots need to be filled now.
Cole, the martial arts inspired dancer, is the first to nail down a place in the Top Twenty. Tappers Aaron and Zack are sent away. That leaves four male dancers and two spots.
Steppers Devon and Brandon face the panel together. Only one will go forward – it’s Brandon.
The final two dancers vying for the final spot are Cyrus, who struggled to learn choreography but impressed with his unique solos, and Feliciano, who is a true entertainer.
Three cheers for the underdog! Cyrus makes it! Awesome!
Cole, Brandon, and Cyrus perform live on stage in a baseball-themed number.
The Top Ten girls (minus Janelle) do their first routine with Travis Wall. He was able to throw in some harder tricks in practice – they’re that good! They take to the stage to show the results, performing to When The Light Gets In. Haunting visuals! Love it! Nigel raves about the dance – and Travis’ choreography. Zooey says it was a beautiful routine for such beautiful girls!
The Top Ten guys worked with Sonya Tayeh, who ordered them to take off their shirts ASAP. Matthew is self-conscious about his flubbery waistline, but the others bring the energy in practice. On stage live, the guys perform in black high-waisted judo-type pants. The choreography seems to capitalize on all their strengths, incorporating aerials, pirouettes, martial arts, and lifts! Nigel is unsure about the ‘maternity’ pants! Too funny! He adds that Sonya ‘gave birth’ to a phenomenal routine! Mary crows that it was unbelievable – very strong! Zooey offers to join in the routine with the guys!
Last, but certainly not least, the Top Twenty perform a Mia Michaels routine! It’s a futuristic number set to Look Into My Eyes – intense! Nigel tells Mia, “Welcome home, Mama. You’ve been missed.”
