Duets Recap: A Blast From The (Not-So Distant) Past

June 28, 2012 06:25 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

The moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived: it’s the first live show on ABC’s Duets! The theme for the night is songs from the 2000s, so there should be some familiar melodies included in the mix. Keep reading for more details on tonight’s episode of Duets!

Last week on Duets, Kelly Clarkson lost her first contestant. Now, Jennifer Nettles remains the only mentor with both of her partners in tow. The pressure’s really on for the other three mentors!

All four mentors bring the show to a great start with a rousing rendition of Freedom. The bummer about having these guys and gals open the show is that the following duets aren’t always able to live up to that first amazing performance. But that might not be a problem this week, because fan fave John Glosson is up first! John’s performing one of his favorite songs: When You Say You Love Me by Josh Groban. Jennifer plans to capitalize on the romantic feel of the song, even if it means she has to “get all up in [John's] grill.” She does just that and John doesn’t back away! Kelly loves it but John Legend thinks the song’s a bit “syrupy.”

Olivia Chisolm is also going for the romance with Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now. She looks great in a sparkly dress and sky-high heels, but her voice? Not so much. It sounds pretty pitchy, but Kelly and Jennifer chalk that up to nerves. Either way, the performance was a bit of a let down after last week.

Kelly Clarkson sure had a tough time last week, what with both of her singers landing on the bottom. This week, she and her sole remaining partner Jason Farol are begging America for Mercy by singing the huge Duffy hit from a few years back. Robin responds to a fantastic performance by pulling the usual flirtation (this time with Kelly). Jennifer thinks that Jason will have no trouble moving out of the bottom if America’s teenage girls get off their butts and vote.

Bridget Carrington brings out her inner diva with Beyonce’s Halo. She looks strong and confident tonight. Robin acknowledges that the song was a bit weak at the beginning but just kept getting better as it went on. And Jennifer is a huge fan of the song choice.

Jennifer Nettles and J Rome decide to pick up the energy with the David Guetta and Usher hit Without You. Move over Usher, this guy knows how to perform! Surprise, surprise, Robin Thicke completely passes up the J Rome commentary in order to sweet talk Jennifer. But Kelly is full of compliments, saying that she can’t wait to see J Rome in concert.

The contestants have given it all they’ve got and now their fates are up to the voters. Which duet did you like the best? Share your favorites below!

Robin Thicke comes off as a sleazy pimp. What exactly is the point of his being on the show?? He contributes nothing.
