So You Think You Can Dance judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is a classic overachiever. In addition to producing SYTYCD and American Idol, he has taken on a brand new show. How does this new reality series differ from the ones Lythgoe has worked on in the past? Keep reading to find out?
Nigel Lythgoe obviously likes to keep himself busy. He may be knee-deep in the current season of So You Think You Can Dance, but that’s not stopping him from working on his latest project: a new reality show appropriately named Opening Act.
Opening Act may share American Idol’s task of turning unknowns into superstars, but that’s where the similarities end. Instead of having hopefuls line up for audition, the show’s producers take on the task of finding talent on their own. They sift through countless YouTube channels and other internet sites in order to find musicians with potential. Then, the lucky chosen ones are given the opportunity to open for big-name stars.
There’s always a catch in reality shows, and Opening Act is no different. The musicians chosen for Opening Act are given only five days to prepare for their big debuts. Nigel Lythgoe thinks that the element of surprise really makes the show exciting. He told Zap2It, ”…we go and knock on their doors and say, ‘You’re really good at performing in front of the camera in your own home. How are you going to be performing in front of a large audience? Because you’re opening for Rod Stewart in Las Vegas.’”
The concept behind Opening Act is definitely an intriguing one. But it’s be even more interesting to see how the show pans out. It premieres July 9th on E! so be sure to check it out for yourself!
