America’s Got Talent Recap: Big Barry’s Fate Is Decided

July 11, 2012 07:09 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

The highlight (or low point?!) of last night’s episode of America’s Got Talent was definitely the Howard vs Howie cat fight over Big Barry, the tiny singer with a huge voice. Did the audience come through with the pity vote? Keep reading to find out!

America has voted and the first two contestants going head to head are Turf and Tim Hockenberry, aka the two T’s. The judges love both, so this is all a bit nerve-wracking. Turns out, the two T’s both made the semifinals! Of course, this means that there are only two spots are left, so the pressure’s on!

The remaining contestants will have to stew a little longer because it’s Gavin DeGraw’s turn to wow the crowd! His singing is great, but his outfit? Not so much. The Dancing with the Stars alum is already well known for his penchant for fedoras and his lack of dance moves. Both are evident on the America’s Got Talent stage. Still, he’s a fun guy and he’s got a wonderful voice.

Four contestants come out at once now: The Lisa Clark Dancers, The All Ways, Big Barry and the Aurora Light Painters. None of them really impressed last night. We all know how Howard feels about Big Barry. Tonight, he adds in another jab by comparing Barry to American Idol’s Sanjaya…and then to herpes (because neither of them go away). All four acts are cut, and as Sharon admits, it doesn’t really come as a big surprise.

Now it’s Tom Cotter vs LionDanceMe vs Hawley Magic. Tom Cotter was by far the most impressive of this bunch, which is why it’s great to hear that he’s made it through to the semifinals! All three judges are clearly psyched, as they should be!

Guest act Traces impressed last year and they’re back again for more! Their act requires incredible strength, flexibility and balance. and of course, the performers possess all three! Good thing none of the contestants have to follow that act up tonight, because they would have a tough time of it.

Only three acts remain: Ben Blaque, Donovan and Rebecca and Danielle Stallings. All three are amazing, so it’s pretty unfortunate that only one will make it. Ben Blaque is cut right off the bat. The judges get to choose the final act for semifinals and it can’t be an easy decision to make! Howard is all for Donovan and Rebecca. Sharon gives her vote to Danielle. Howie has the deciding vote and he ultimately chooses to put Donovan and Rebecca through to semifinals. Danielle looks upset, and who can blame her? Still, for variety’s sake, this was probably the best decision.

Next week, we get to see another twelve acts take on the big stage in New York! Stay tuned for more talent…and more bickering from Howard and Howie!

I am happy for Tom Cotter and Donovan and Rebecca. I am surprised that it was such a close call between the acrobats and Danielle. I think she’s a talented little girl, but she was very off-key in places and I don’t think she’s ready yet.

Try as I might, I do not understand the enthusiasm for Turf. I also think Tim Hockenberry is a very capable bar singer, but unless he’s an amazing songwriter and we haven’t heard his stuff yet, he’s not a million dollar act.
