So You Think You Can Dance Recap: Speed Dating With The Top 20

July 11, 2012 08:21 PM by Shayla Perry

Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the judges picked the Top 20. Tonight, in the first LIVE show of the season, the individual contestants compete for your votes…and they really, really want you to like them. What did you miss, and how many useless facts about yourself can you cram into 9 seconds? All the highlights after the jump.

This week on FOX….

After a group routine choreographed by Christopher Scott, rivaling last week’s Mia Michaels number, Witney Carson and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp kick off the competition with a Samba choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. It was a “star” performance by Witney, who’s all aboard the hot tamale train, but Mary Murphy, Kenny Ortega, and Nigel Lythgoe agree that Chehon has a lot of work to do regarding his footwork and and body movements.

Tiffany Maher and partner George Lawrence II are up next, dancing Sonya Tayeh‘s star-crossed lovers routine. The performance is so hot that it leaves Mary almost speechless…almost. With such great chemistry straight out of the gate, will these two be the ones to beat this season?

Not if Janaya French and Brandon Mitchell can help it. You’d think it would be a little difficult to follow something so romantic with a hip-hop number, but Napoleon and a very pregnant Tabatha Dumo outdid themselves with an extremely powerful story and choreography.

Alexa Anderson and Daniel Baker are taking on Sean Cheesman‘s jazz routine. It’s a demanding performance with a lot going on, so the judges worry about the audience getting to really connect with the dancers. Maybe they’ll need a little more time to tells us about the kinds of food they like and their quirky talents.

Amber Jackson and Nick Bloxsom-Carter are doing a Waltz choreographed by Jason Gilkison. Ballroom is Nick’s genre, so luckily, the judges think he did a phenomenal job. But Nigel says that’s thanks to Jason going all Abby Lee Miller on him during rehearsals.

Next, Amelia Lowe and Will Thomas are a purr-fect pair, with a character hop performance that gets them a standing ovation from the audience. Hats off to Napoleon and Tabatha!

Janelle Issis and Dareian Kujawa are doing another demanding Sean Cheesman routine. Poor Janelle somehow managed to make it through without any stitches or bruising (that we know of), and if she stays out of the ER, she just may go the distance in the competition.

Tyce Diorio has created a Broadway number for  Eliana Girard and Cyrus Spencer. It’s Cyrus’ first time doing a choreographed number and the two of them KILL it!

Audrey Case and Matthew Kazmierczack are taking on a Travis Wall piece. The performance has the entire audience AND the judges out of their seats, with Nigel calling it his favorite of the night.

But there’s still one more….Lindsay Arnold and Cole Horibe. Jason Gilkison has created a brilliant and exhilarating routine for them. Once again, everyone is out of their seats, giving Audrey and Matthew some competition.

Which pair was your favorite?
