It’s hard to believe it was just two years ago that Demi Lovato was checking into rehab to get treatment for her “emotional and physical issues.” Now, with a new job as a judge on FOX‘s X Factor and her career on the upswing, the former Disney star is finally ready to open up about the self-harming that almost threatened her life.
“There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin — that if I didn’t do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode,” Lovato, 19, tells Self in the magazine’s August issue.
“I cut myself to take my mind off that,” she continues. “I just didn’t care what happened. I had no fear.”
Since her rehab stint, the former Disney star has fortunately found better ways to cope, and makes a conscious effort to take care of herself.
“I make time for myself and meditate,” says Demi. “I’ve spent the past two years getting over an eating disorder and issues like self-harming and bipolar disorder. I have to work on this stuff every day. I’m reminded of that whenever I eat or feel down.”
Oh, and in addition to limiting the stress in her life, Demi’s also cutting back on something else — her cell phone use!
“I haven’t used my cell in three months!” Lovato reveals. “Subconsciously, it was a crutch. When a room gets quiet, what do you do? Grab your phone! Now I can sit and have conversations with people.”
