A lot of big names have been floating around as possible replacements for Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler on the judges panel of American Idol; from Aretha Franklin to Mariah Carey. But according to the producer of the FOX show, Nigel Lythgoe, all of the media speculation is actually hurting negotiations (sorry about that!). Another thing that’s making the search difficult — the actual contract. Whether it’s Mariah, Miley Cyrus, Adam Lambert, or anyone else, Lythgoe says that it’s time for them to start considering one season terms for judges. Why?
“[T]here are so many names coming at me at the moment,” Lythgoe told Idol host Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show. “I joke about it and say, ‘Oh, I’m looking for the Three Stooges or Jerry Lewis. But at the end of the day, I think what we’ve seriously got to talk about is just using people for a year…If we do want these big stars, and we do, you cannot take them away from what they do,” Nigel explained. “That’s depriving the public of a star for a start, and stopping them from earning a lot of money.”
Admitting that he’s “really upset” about Lopez and Tyler’s decisions to leave (so does that mean they really weren’t fired?), Lythgoe said that he understands why they did it.
“They’ve got much bigger careers than just sitting judging Idol. They’re both very talented people and you have to respect their decision to carry on and do what they were doing before Idol. It breaks my heart, because I love them both dearly.”
What do you think RTVM: Should American Idol have new judges on the panel each season, or do you like the idea of having the same ones stay for a longer period of time? Sound off in the Comments section below.
