Okay, after some careful consideration (and a lot of tissues), we’ve decided that ABC should issue a warning before each episode of their newest reality hit, NY Med. There’s absolutely no way you can get through one of these episodes without shedding at least one tear, and if you can, well, maybe it’s time you seek some medical attention. And we know a few good doctors who could probably help you out, too! What had us reaching for the Kleenex this week?
In addition to being one of the few feel good reality shows on the air, so far, NY Med has also proven to be pretty educational.
During the premiere episode, we learned how to treat those pesky 4 hour erections, and this week’s valuable lesson: “Boobs rule the world.” (Though some of us already knew that one.)
Aside from the ER traumas and patients demanding Cheerios over Corn Flakes, tonight’s show was another tearjerker. Here’s the rundown:
Jon Kuhfeldt has been waiting for a new liver for 8 months, determined to be able to walk his daughter down the aisle and dance at her upcoming wedding.
The wait isn’t the only thing that’s posing a problem for Mr. Kuhfeldt though; it’s also the frequent bacterial infections that he keeps getting, making it a race against the clock for him and his physician, Dr. Michael Kluger.
By the time Dr. Kluger gets to call Jon’s wife to tell her that they’ve found a liver for him, we’ve already lost track of how many times we’ve started to cry, so we can kind of (somewhat) understand how it’s an “emotional rollercoaster” for the entire Kuhfeldt family.
The hug with his wife and son right before going into the OR — THAT was a rough one. Seeing Jon whisper to his son that he has to take care of his mother and that he loves him…OMG! Heartbreaking!
Despite a minor hiccup during the transplant (okay, maybe a cyst on the donor liver that had the possibility of being cancerous was a little more than minor), the surgery is a success, and after recovering, Jon is able to leave the hospital and get ready for that wedding. (Yes, even more tears.)
But, as if they haven’t toyed with our emotions enough, there’s more….
Dr. Sebastian Schubl, having already dealt with everything from aortic aneurisms to drunken bar fighters, is treating a young woman, Joanna Cetta, who has a mass in her colon.
It could be cancerous, but the doctors won’t know until they’ve taken a closer look at it. (More tears as she and her parents worry, so now we’re worried, and the whole rollercoaster ride starts again.)
Once they operate, they find that the mass is solid, but there is good news — it seems to be benign. They had to remove part of Joanna’s colon, and the doctors have yet to figure out what the mass is and what caused it, but she’s going to be fine. (You guessed it…more tears.)
Next week, we’re definitely going to be prepared with tissues at the ready…and waterproof mascara.
Are you loving ABC’s NY Med as much as we are? Tell us about it in the Comments section below. And if not, seriously…seek help.
