One Million Moms Petition Against NeNe Leakes’ New TV Gig. Will It Still Air?

July 22, 2012 03:00 PM by Shayla Perry

Rumor has it that her spot on Bravo‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta may be in jeopardy after a scuffle with a producer, and now, it seems that there’s some controversy surrounding NeNe Leakes‘ other TV gig, too. One Million Moms – the same group that fought against JCPenney’s decision to hire Ellen DeGeneres as a spokeswoman – has launched a campaign to have NBC drop Ryan Murphy‘s show, The New Normal, from its fall line-up. Why? All the details after the jump.

Finally, some drama that wasn’t started by a Housewife…well, not a “Real Housewife.”

This time, it’s a group of angry mothers who are trying to stop Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s show, The New Normal from debuting in the fall.

The series, which features The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s NeNe Leakes, is about a gay couple trying to have their own child with the help of a surrogate; a theme that the organization, One Million Moms, isn’t too happy about.

“NBC is using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage,” the group writes on their website, adding, “These things are harmful to our society, and this program is damaging to our culture.”

GLAAD – the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – issued its own statement in response to One Million Moms’ campaign against the show, which reads:

“Yet again, One Million Moms, a project of the American Family Association – whose membership we already know is far less substantial than their name – is doing its best to stir controversy where there clearly is none.

“From hit shows like Glee and Modern Family, it’s clear that Americans today don’t care whether their favorite TV characters are straight or gay. We now live in a culture where gay people are not only a part of our society, but where gay characters are also applauded by both TV critics and audiences alike.”

So far, NBC appears to agree with GLAAD’s stance, as there aren’t any plans to remove the program from its line-up.

The New Normal, featuring NeNe Leakes, is set to premiere on September 11 at 9:30|8:30c.

While I would normally praise any group trying to stop one of these “Real Housewives” (they are anything but)from making a penny by being on TV, These people are boycotting the wrong show for the wrong reason. They should be boycotting the Real Housewives series if they are concerned with the decay of morals and values. These women are a prime example of people acting like complete @$$holes all of the time.
