So You Think You Can Dance has switched it up this year, cutting the results show in favor of a once-a-week format. There will also be two winners now, with both a male and female contestant being crowned as America’s Favorite Dancer. While some viewers aren’t happy about the changes, the judges haven’t been complaining. Read more to find out why judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy think the new SYTYCD format is a good thing.
If you’ve been watching SYTYCD this season, you may have noticed that a few things are different. The show is now aired only once a week, and, at the end, it will be handing out awards for the best guy and the best girl. Judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are both enjoying the new format, as they explained at length on Monday during a Television Critics Association panel.
Nigel Lythgoe likes a lot of things about the show’s new format, but he is especially excited about having two winners. “I have no idea really why we never did that in the first place…it just makes so much sense because guys do dance more athletically than girls. Having said that, the girls nowadays are just stunning. They’re warriors.”
Mary Murphy is enjoying the ability to mull things over for an entire week before cutting dancers. “It gives me much more of a calming effect than in the past, it was really rushed…We hate to see anybody go, of course, but the fact is, this is a competition, we’re going to get down to two champions. I thought it was really brilliant and it helped me be calm about, ‘Did I make the right decision? Did I make the best possible decision about this person’s career?’”
Well, Mary has a point. We think it would be awful to have to choose between such amazingly talented performers! How do you like SYTYCD’s new format? Feel free to weigh in below!
