While “American Idol” has never really been down with rap, one prominent star of hip hop is requesting a seat on the judges panel. Break out the ganja weed, dawg, cause Snoop Dogg is interested in the vacant spot left by Steven Tyler on “American Idol.”
If Snoop Dogg joins the cast, Randy’s catch phrase, “Yo Dawg,” is going to take on a whole new meaning. Snoop Dogg is apparently interested in the green (the money, not the weed) being thrown at potential judges. When he found out that Mariah Carey is earning about $18 million a year for a one-year contract, Snoop somewhat jokingly told his manager to “Get on it!” In an interview this week Snoop said “I’ll do Idol.”
It remains to be seen if “American Idol” producers find Snoop the ideal fit for their audience. Considering that they’ve been targeting wholesome country crooners to woo Southern viewers, Snoop may not be high on their list considering he might opt to be high while he’s judging. Snoop understands the Idol audience and added, ‘‘I’ll clean my act up, but I’m still Rastafari.’’
There’s been no comment on the Snoop speculation from the American Idol camp, so the concept may go up in smoke. The producers have until fall to ultimately decide on the judging panel since the show is still in mass audition mode which doesn’t require the official judges to be present.
What do you think about Snoop joining the Idol cast instead of a country star? Are you cool with it or are you a little more Keith Urban than urban gangsta?
