He might not be an athlete, but Phillip Phillips has earned himself a gold medal! Well, he might not actually get a medal, but the American Idol champ has reached the top spot on the iTunes chart for his hit song Home. While Home has been popular in its own right since its premiere on Idol, the Olympics is largely responsible for launching the song to its number one status. Keep reading for Phillips’ reaction to this big achievement!
It’s been a great week for American Idol winner Phillip Phillips. First, his song Home was featured repeatedly during the women’s round of Olympic gymnastics. Then, the song rebounded on iTunes, quickly hitting the number one spot for downloads. Before it was featured in the Olympics, the song had peaked in tenth place shortly after Phillips was crowned on American Idol. By the start of the Olympics, it had dropped below the eightieth slot. Given its relatively low ranking as of last week, Phillips’ meteoric rise on iTunes is all the more impressive.
Phillip Phillips responded to his recent success with a typical mixture of excitement and modesty. He was quick to thank his fans on Twitter, tweeting “Just saw where “Home”is on the iTunes chart! Thank you everyone who has bought it &supporting me.” In a later interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Phillips again expressed his gratitude. ”It’s an honor for [the Olympics] to use that song, and I’m so proud of it and how well it has done.” He added, “It’s so insane. It’s pretty amazing. I never thought any of this would ever happen.”
Well, Phillips’ fans always knew that the talented singer was destined for success. Home’s position on the iTunes chart is just another sign of good things to come for this American Idol champ.
