Sharon Osbourne left fans of America’s Got Talent wondering whether or not she would return to the show for several weeks now, but most of us expected her to return. Or maybe we just couldn’t imagine America’s Got Talent without Sharon Osbourne, but now we will have to. Say it ain’t so! Unfortunately, it is true, and you may be surprised to learn why the star has quit the series.
If you are a Sharon Osbourne fan, this is your last season to enjoy her on America’s Got Talent, as the star revealed that she is quitting, and will not return next season. The reason? A nasty dispute with NBC, in which the network apparently cut ties with her son, Jack after his MS diagnosis. Sharon Osbourne spoke to The New York Post recently, and explained that Jack was supposed to appear on their new series, Stars Earn Stripes, but was then diagnosed with MS. When the network learned of the diagnosis, they fired Jack by e-mail two days before he was to report to work, and she claims that they then lied about it to the press.
“I just can’t be fake. It’s discrimination, and it was badly handled,” Sharon Osbourne told the paper, adding that it’s time for her to move on. The network however, claims that Jack Osbourne was not under contract with them, but was merely “in talks” about participating in the series. His mother has another story though, and claims it was a verbal agreement in which she had good faith that NBC would come through. Why did Sharon trust the verbal agreement? “I was working without a signed contract right up until the live shows started on ‘America’s Got Talent.’ Everything is done at the last minute. We took six months to negotiate back and forth.”
Sharon Osbourne also provided The New York Post with an email that her son received from the network stating: “Regretfully, we cannot move forward with Jack’s participation,” adding that the reason being that the “The rigors of the show were too intense for him.” Jack Osbourne even offered to buy his own insurance policy for the show, but the network declined.
Meanwhile, the network offered to pay Jack’s full salary for the gig, in an attempt to smooth things over, but Sharon was not having any of that. “He didn’t want the money. He wanted his gig. It gave him something to look forward to when he was diagnosed. Think of the good that it could have done to show other people who have this [condition] that your life is not over,” Sharon said, and we have to agree with her there!
Since the announcement, NBC has issued the following statement: “Sharon has been a valuable part of the NBC family. We regret any misunderstanding and wish Jack well.”
Moral of the story, don’t mess with the cub if you can’t handle momma’s claws. We wish Sharon Osbourne well in her future endeavors, and we will certainly miss her on America’s Got Talent!
