Abby Lee Miller of Dance Moms, a reality show that celebrates scheming stage moms and abusive dance instructors, scores a new show on Lifetime. Because one dance show is not enough for Abby or Lifetime? Not enough children have been scarred for life? Who knows why, but Lifetime has awarded Abby Lee Miller with a new show. The premise is truly frightening.
Think So You Think You Can Dance for kids. Aspiring young dancers enter a dance competition, hoping to realize their dreams of making it big. Only, Abby Lee Miller is the head judge, and the poor kids are forever plagued with nightmares. “It’s going to make amazing television,” promises Abby. Well, there is that. And isn’t that what it’s all about for Lifetime? Fame-seeking parents subject their children to Abby’s antics, Lifetime airs it, and people watch. It’s a vicious cycle.
The new reality series is appropriately named Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. Robin Antin, founder of the pop group Pussycat Dolls, and celebrity choreographer Richard Jackson will also serve as judges. Kevin Manno will host. The show will follow 12 dancers, age six through 13, as they compete for a $100,000 cash prize and a scholarship to the Young Dancer Program at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York.
The dancers’ moms will be involved in the competition, making key decisions about music, choreography, and costumes. The dancers will be put through challenges that test their skills, learn new routines, and perform for the judges and a live audience. One dancer will be eliminated each week. Lifetime promises “an intense on stage competition and stakes between dancers and mothers increase throughout the season – culminating with a finale performance that assuredly will change the winning dancer’s life forever.” For the sake of the children involved, let’s hope for the better.
Lifetime has ordered 10 episodes of Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, which will premiere this fall. Until then, you can catch Dance Moms on Tuesday nights on Lifetime.
Are you excited to see more of Abby on TV or are you cringing at the thought?
