Stars Earn Stripes Recap: Who Said Tough Guys Could Swim?

August 13, 2012 08:15 PM by Lisa Princ

Tonight on NBC, we watched the premiere of their new military style competition, Stars Earn Stripes. But, was the new series a hit, or was it as bad as Jack Osbourne predicted it to be? Let’s just say we have a new found appreciation for what our miliary actually does!

Stars Earn Stripes premiered tonight on NBC, and one thing that this show did not lack (like most other reality shows) was the action! While the show definitely gave us a new found appreciation for what our military men and women do, the verdict is still out on whether or not it was a bit contrived, or completely real.

The series put each celebrity contestant (Laila Ali, Dean Cain, Terry Crews, Nick Lachey, Todd Palin, Dolvett Quince, Picabo Street, Eve Torres) with a real life military hero, ranging from a US Marine, to a police officer, to a Navy seal, etc. The special operatives then trained their celebrity partner, which seemed to make it look too easy. I mean, don’t these guys actually train for years?

In any event, the pairs were taken to a remote location, where General Wesley Clark would send them on a mission. After each successful mission, the stars would earn a stripe, aka getting some money for their charity, with the winner of the entire show ending up with the $100k prize for charity.

This week’s mission consisted of swimming in full gear, shooting targets, crawling in mud, and blowing up a building. Sounds exciting, right? For the most part it was as the teams of four raced to get it done the quickest, because the slowest time would end up with two celebrities battling it out to stay or go home.

Oddly enough, we watched Nick Lachey and Eve Torres, along with their operatives end up with the best time. I mean, come on, who knew Nick Lackey had it in him? Even Eve stated beforehand that she felt Nick would be the weak link on their team, but he proved them all wrong! So, no worries ladies, you have another week to drool over Nick.

The worst part? No, not the fact that Todd Palin is competing, but that two of the competitors almost drowned! Although in Todd’s defense, he did prove tonight what a real tough guy he could be, and is probably the only member of the Palin family that is not utterly annoying! When Dolvett Quince had to be rescued almost immediately upon hitting the water (yes, sorry to say my fellow Biggest Loser fans) and was removed from the mission, Todd Palin stepped it up and pulled the team through – he had to be the fastest celebrity in the mud!

Luckily, Dolvett was not the only celeb who almost drowned. Former NFL player, Terry Crews suffered the same fate when he hit the water. Seriously? What is it with these big tough guys being unable to swim? Since both Terry and Dolvett could not complete their missions tonight, these two were pitted against one another in one final battle to see who would be sent packing. Despite an early lead, Dolvett could not complete his final sniper task quicker than Terry, leaving Dolvett as the celebrity going home tonight.

Dolvett Quince did not leave empty handed though – he did receive a donation for his charity, and left us with one of the funnier moments of the show, when the rest of the clan deemed him and his operative “the clean team” aka two Mr. Clean look-a-likes!  Oh, and we are sure that Dolvett is never going to live with this one down with Bob Harper!

Your hatred of all things Palin comes through loud and clear.

They could have made the show SO much better. First, send the celebrities through real boot camp. That could have lasted a few episodes. Second, let the real heroes show off their skills in a “The Real Heroes Show Off Their Skills” episode so we could get a better appreciation for them as individuals. I don’t know what else. It sucked pretty hard. But that one guy looks JUST like Alex O’Loughlin from Hawaii 5-0, right!

Why the Palin snark? Totally, gratuitous, mean & detracts from your review. It so happens that Palin is a four time IronDog snow machine champion that rsces 2000 miles across Alaskan wilderness for 7 days in minus 50 degreees below zero temps…most can’t even breath in that never mind race. Palin is also the only competitor who has a son serving now in Afghanistan, 2nd tour, & previously in Iraq. A true military family of sacrifice & love of country.

The title is Stars Earn Stripes I don’t believe I have ever seen Palin on a tv series or in a movie, good for him for being a dogsled driver but he should not have been considered for this sorry just my opinion

Amazing how Palin lives in your head. You need to move on because again you are sounding small and trivial which is what you are.
You seem to think that standing on Palin’s small shoulders will make you look better.
Try and disguise it a little, it would help your image.

Good grief. Is there any reality t.v. show that the Palins won’t do? Pathetic.

Horrible show. I know TV has been a virtual wasteland for some time but this crosses a line that still surprises me. War is not a game. If war is ever a necessity, then preparing for war is necessary, but it is at best a grim necessity, not something to be celebrated. They are practicing ways to kill people better! I don’t understand how anyone could enjoy watching this if they thought about if for a minute.

I totally enjoyed this show, Todd Palin and all.People make too much of little things now a days. Just enjoy the show and appreciate what our men and women in the armed forces go through for this country. I’m 60 years old, but I would love to do this!

Great show. Fitting tribute to our military…to those who serve w/ a quiet valor…they don’t boast about their heroics, so it’s really nice to have real operatives & cops participate & get noticed.

If the show was condemning the military, as most Hollywood movies do, Tutu & his Nobel prize wining friends (terrorist Arafat was also a Nobel prize winner)would not be protesting. Sorry, Tutu & Code Pink, most Americans are grateful for our fighting men & women in uniform.

As for Todd Palin, the IronDog champ & father of a son serving in Afghanistan, well, he stole the show among the celebrities & w/ a display of heart, determination & athleticism he paid respect to all the operatives. The Palins have contributed & sacrificed greatly to this country & many want to thank them, too.

jc, Where did you get the idea that Todd Palin was a “dogsled driver”? He is a snow mobile racer.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS SHOW !! When John Stewart mentioned
it on his show I thought it was a fantasy. Who dreamed up
this disgusting idea?? I guess we haven’t progressed too far from
the Gladiator spectacle. Most Reality shows have little to do with
reality but this is a travesty & insults our poor soldiers & what
    they go through.
