Top Chef Masters Recap: Cookout In The Grand Canyon

Pop music legends, the B-52s make an appearance on tonight’s episode of Top Chef: Masters. In addition to preparing meals for music artists, the remaining chefs also travel to the Grand Canyon for a once-in-a-lifetime experience to cook for the Hualapai tribe. Using ingredients from the tribe’s sacred land, the chefs must display their culinary skills on the Bravo reality TV series. Who will impress the tribe and the judges? Keep reading to find out!

Along with bragging rights, the chefs are competing for prizes and money that will be donated to their charities. The show is based in Las Vegas and all of the chefs put their luck to the test. The eight competing chefs are Patricia Yeo, Takashi Yagihashi, Art Smith, Thierry Rautureau, Kerry Heffernan, Lorena Garcia, Clark Frasier and Chris Cosentino.

The rotating judges include Krista Simmons, Francis Lam, Ruth Reichl and James Oseland.

For this week’s Quick Fire Challenge the remaining chefs must make meatless salads in 8 minutes. The chefs get to choose from a selection of 52 ingredients to make their dishes. After tasting the salads the B-52s pick Lorena as the winner. She receives $5,000 for her charity as well as immunity!

It was an announcement no one saw coming–the chefs have the opportunity to literally cook in the Grand Canyon! The chefs fly in a helicopter over the Hoover Dam and over the Grand Canyon eventually touching down. The chefs are given ingredients from the Hualapai tribe’s sacred land. The chefs get the amazing chance to cook in the middle of the Grand Canyon. While relishing in the moment, the chefs notice it starts to rain. Now the pressure is really on to present their best dishes despite the bad weather. Each team finishes and explains the dish they have prepared to the judges and the tribe.

Everyone is very nervous heading into the critics table expect Lorena–who has immunity. After tasting the dishes and hearing feedback from members of the tribe, the judges reveal the two best dishes. Thierry and Takashi’s venison dish and Chris and Patricia’s rabbit dish are the favorite dishes but there can only be one winner. The judges select Thierry and Takashi’s venison dish as tonight’s best dish. Both Thierry and Takashi receive $5,000 each for their charities.

After deliberating the judges decide to eliminate Clark Frasier whose corn dish was just too bland. Curtis tells Clark they will be making a donation to his charity.
