If you’ve ever made it through an entire episode of Toddlers and Tiaras, you may have wished for the hasty arrival of child protective services. Although none of the children have yet been snatched away by social workers, one Toddlers and Tiaras mom currently risks losing custody of her little diva. Don’t get your hopes up yet; a long custody battle awaits.
Lindsay Jackson made headlines last year when she had her daughter perform a disturbingly risque number for a pageant featured on Toddlers and Tiaras. The then 5-year-old Maddy Verst pranced around stage dressed up as Dolly Parton. Her costume included lots of rhinestones, teased hair….and padded breasts.
Now, Jackson is fighting Bill Verst (her ex) for custody of their daughter. Verst argues that his daughter was put at risk by being exposed to pageant culture. Normally, we would side with him, but Jackson does have a good counterpoint: Verst is a convicted felon, currently on probation for driving under the influence.
Jackson also objects to being demonized for allowing her daughter to participate in pageants, which she argues are “just like any other extracurricular activity like soccer or gymnastics or football.” She apparently doesn’t realize that soccer, gymnastics and football do not involve wearing padded bras at 5 years of age. Nor, for that matter, do most pageants.
During a Friday hearing, the judge imposed a gag order on Jackson. Additionally, Maddy and her mom are prohibited from participating in pageants until further notice. The court will meet again at the end of August to hear the rest of the testimony and make a decision. And that can’t be an easy decision to make. Convicted felon or crazy stage mom? Who would you choose?
