Tonight, in Part I of the two-night season finale of ABC‘s NY Med, Dr. Mehmet Oz returns to perform an aortic valve replacement on an 87-year-old patient whose husband is terrified at the mere thought of losing her. Plus, a young couple braces for the birth of their second child; a baby whose heart will have to be reconstructed as soon as it’s born.
Eighty-seven year old Grace Diaferia suffers from aortic stenosis; meaning that the aortic valve in her heart is so narrow that her blood can’t get out, and instead, it’s backing up into her lungs.
But Grace Diaferia also has a great doctor who plans to replace her aortic valve with one that’s made from animal tissue, which probably wouldn’t have been possible if she hadn’t paid attention to her symptoms.
The surgery has to be “meticulous, slow and perfect” because of Grace’s frailty, but Dr. Oz is up to the challenge, and afterward, she’s doing so well that he gives her the go-ahead to have as much sex as she wants.
Jill and Joe Schmidt are visiting Dr. Emile Bacha. Already parents to a two-year-old daughter, in the middle of their pregnancy, the couple learned that their unborn son has a heart abnormality and will need surgery immediately after his birth.
But first, they have to get through the C-section.
Four days after his birth, the doctors discover that the baby’s heart isn’t in the right place, which will make the surgery a lot more difficult. Still, Jill and Joe remain hopeful.
Making things even more complicated — the tissues of a newborn heart are very delicate, but despite the challenges, Dr. Bacha and his team are able to do a complete repair.
The second part of NY Med‘s 2-part season finale airs Wednesday, August 22 at 10|9c.
