As much as we want to hate Basketball Wives L.A.‘s Laura Govan for having four kids and such a killer body, we can’t be mad at her. Besides, she’s earned it! After dropping a staggering 84 pounds, the VH1 reality star is sharing her get slim secrets with RTVM, and giving us the skinny on what motivated her to lose the baby weight and change her life in the process.
Laura Govan is back for another season of drama and drink throwing on VH1′s Basketball Wives L.A., but this time, you may notice that she’s looking a little different. And no, she didn’t get that way with gastric bypass surgery, which is what most people tend to think when they see the dramatic change in her appearance. That and, ‘Day-um!’
So how did she manage to lose close to 85 pounds in 8 months?
“I’m naturally a really thin person,” Govan tells RTVM, admitting that by baby number four, shedding the weight proved to be far more difficult for her than it was in the past.
“Afterward I was just like, ‘OK, what happened? I guess I’m gettin’ older,’” she recalled of her initial weight loss. “I got to a point where I peaked, and then I had to work my butt off the rest of the way. There was no slacking.”
What was motivating Laura to drop the pounds was the fact that she wasn’t with fiancee Gilbert Arenas at the time.
“I thought, ‘The next time he ever sees me, I’ll show him,’” Govan jokes. But aside from the NBA all-star waiting in the wings, she also wanted to lose the weight for someone else…herself.
“I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to look good. I wanted to feel good. Not just for anybody else, but for myself. Once I realized that, I just took over,” says Govan.
“On top of doing two-a-days, in between that I was playing basketball and I was taking the kids and incorporating their [lives] into my life,” Laura reveals of her intense regimen. “If they were playing soccer, I was running up and down the field. If I washed dishes, I turned it into a workout. I had my own plan.”
Not to say that she didn’t have moments where she gave in to her cheeseburger cravings (she is human), but the key was being sensible about her choices.
And her secret to keeping the weight off?
“I do still eat a lot of food, I just eat small portions,” says Govan. “I try to walk a lot. I still work out. You have to just do things in moderation. Everybody’s looking for that quick fix, but you’ve gotta work.”
Soon, you’ll be able to work with Laura. The Basketball Wife is currently putting together exercise DVDs and a cookbook full of quick, healthy recipes for the whole family.
Season 2 of Basketball Wives L.A. premieres Monday, September 10th at 8|7c on VH1.
