Of the three most popular singing competition shows on American TV, only “The X Factor” wanted singer Britney Spears to hold a spot on its judicial bench.
Britney Spears reportedly negotiated for months with the network. In May, she replaced “X Factor” judge Paula Abdul, who was fired – presumably for poor judgment.
The “X Factor” judges also include the show’s executive producer Simon Cowell, which might strike some as a conflict of interest; still, he has not recused himself. The other judges are Epic Records chairman and CEO Antonio “L.A.” Reid and singer Demi Lovato.
Britney Spears has never been on “American Idol,” and as far as is known publicly, her name has not yet come up in the lists of celebrities who have been in talks to be a judge on the show during the various changes in the show’s judging panel.
Neither “American Idol” nor the “The Voice” were eager to hire Britney.
Paul Telegdy is NBC Entertainment’s president of alternative and late-night programming confirmed that the network did not want Britney to be a judge on “The Voice,” but he gushed about Mariah enough to make it apparent that NBC did want Mariah for “The Voice” before Christina Aguilera was hired for its judiciary.
Paul spoke with the Hollywood Reporter, saying this: “We made no secret of the fact that we think Mariah is an extraordinary singer…but there are no hard feelings with Mariah for doing ‘Idol.’ She’s a great person, wonderful company, really fun and an exceptional talent. They should be humbled, delighted and grateful that she’s doing the show.”
When asked if he would “shower similar praise on Britney,” he said, I think people’s curiosity around Britney will always be there. Will it be around her as a panelist on one of these TV shows? That depends on whether she’s good at it,” implying that there was some skill involved.
