Tyra Defends America’s Next Top Model Changes

August 28, 2012 02:00 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

Many longtime fans of America’s Next Top Model were exceedingly disappointed to see their favorite judges and photographer replaced for a new cast that is rather…well, meh. Another change that bothers some viewers: the addition of voting. Tyra thinks ANTM could do with a little housecleaning though, which is why she was all too happy to defend all the sudden changes.

This season’s premiere of America’s Next Top Model was disappointing, to say the least. Maybe we’ve just gotten too accustomed to the antics of Miss Jay, but we really weren’t feeling the new judges. And the addition of voting? We’re not sure about that either. Viewers won’t necessarily vote for the models best suited to high fashion. Maybe the a new name should be added, like America’s Next Favorite Model.

Tyra admits to initially being a little skeptical about the new format and judges. The famous model is all for change though, which is why she was quick to defend the overhaul during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. First, she made a point of highlighting the importance of “rejuvenation and making something that’s been around a long time fresh and exciting again.”

Another benefit of this season? According to Tyra, viewers will get new insights into the life of a model (or, at least, a model wanabe). “We got too much into teaching and challenges and photo shoots and eliminations. So you’ll see in cycle 19 so much of the story will be getting to know the girls, whether emotional or comedic. There’s a cycle one rawness to it.”

Hmm…we’re still skeptical. The first episode just wasn’t that promising. But maybe things will improve as some of the kinks are worked out.

What do you think of all the changes on America’s Next Top Model? Will they help the show stay fresh, or are they ruining everything you loved about it in the first place? Share your thoughts with us below!

I did not care for the new format at all! The young lady who wins the prize is going to be thrown into the fashion world. The lessons, the photoshoots, etc were all important to helping her realize what she was getting into. When I watched the previous seasons I really thought this as a show to jump start a woman’s career and to help her get started with a hue opportunity that 90% of the time would not be available to them. This season looks as if it will be more of a popularity contest, not on who really has what it takes. I loved watching the show for the high fashion, and the judges kept it interesting. Very disappoined now.

I think I missed something-how/where/when are we allowed to vote?

Not a fan. I miss Nigel and the Jays. And don’t care for the social networking element either.

seems very shallow this season, whole format has a disconnected feel to it. these girls are not getting the antm experience as did the others on past seasons. maybe a little revamp would have been ok but this change up may prove to be more than the fans can absorb. Not a fan this cycle at all. really enjoyed all the regulars in past.

I enjoyed the past shows and will not watch in the future. How can the people at home know what it takes to be a model. We were expecting the panel who have experience to be the judges.
Just a joke as far as I am concerned.

Miss the Js and mr. Leon Tally (is it correct spelling?)! They were absolutly fabulous! Hope Tyra will ask them to return.
