Kim Kardashian’s attorneys filed the suit because of an Old Navy TV commercial that featured a similar-looking brunette named Melissa Molinaro, who is also a reality show actress. In fact, at the time of the commercial, she was also reportedly dating one of Kim Kardashian’s ex-boyfriends, football star Reggie Bush.
The drama was worthy of a spin-off reality TV show.
Kim is not the first celebrity to file suit against the company. Other famous people who have sued for misappropriation of image include Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Bette Midler and Vanna White.
In all fairness, those are people who used to be famous.
Kim’s case was settled out of court, before a decision could be reached.
But the lawsuit was privately settled after the two sides engaged a mediator with experience resolving high-profile cases. The terms of the settlement weren’t immediately disclosed, and the Old Navy commercial at issue was apparently taken down from YouTube, but still exists in news reports of the matter.
By dodging a trial, Kim won’t have to show that her brand was damaged or that she can’t sing and dance as well as Molinaro.
Now, Old Navy has hired more famous TV personalities who some people may even remember: Beverly Hills 90210 cast member Jason Priestley and Blossom lead Mayim Biyalick.
There’s a pair that should appeal to the target demographic.
