Famous singers have their share of flub-ups when covering well-known songs. Who could forget that time when Christina Aguilera sang a painful rendition of the National Anthem? American Idol alum Haley Reinhart’s latest lyric mishap may not spark as much outrage as Christina Aguilera’s momentary lapse (unless, of course, you are a hardcore Jackson 5 fan), but in our opinion, it is definitely the more cringe-worthy of the two performances. How did Haley Reinhart manage to mess up so bad?
Chalk it up to a case of the nerves or a complete lack of preparation, but either way, Haley Reinhart screwed up big-time. During a recent performance at Hollywood’s W Hotel, the season 10 contestant butchered the lyrics to the Jackson 5 hit I Want You Back.
The typically spot-on singer did manage to make it through most of the chorus, but really, how hard is it to remember Michael Jackson crooning “ooh baby give me one more chance”? The worst portion of the performance took place during the second verse, when Haley completely stopped singing for what felt like an eternity. A heckler then shouted the obvious: “You don’t know the words!” A few other nay-sayers joined in, but Haley didn’t seem too shaken by their yelling.
The good thing is that, despite the screw-up, Haley’s voice sounded great as usual. Despite constantly forgetting the words, she was able to maintain the melody for nearly the entire song.
The really, really sad thing is that Haley managed to screw up so bad in the first place, given the fact that she was reading the lyrics straight from her phone during the entire performance! But who knows, maybe the phone was more of a hindrance than a help. We’re hoping that this is just a fluke, because we expect a whole lot more from a musician of Haley’s caliber!
