It’s time to get excited, because Ricki Lake has returned for another stab at hosting a daytime talk show! The Dancing with the Stars alum has already filled this role once before, but she now feels more confident in her ability to bring wisdom and humor to the daytime syndicate. Can she cut it as an Oprah replacement?
The last time actress Ricki Lake launched a talk show, she was only 24 years old. Looking back on her career, Ricki feels that, while hosting a show at such a young age was a great experience, it wasn’t necessarily one she was ready for at the time. “I didn’t know what I was signing up for. I didn’t know how to host a show. I didn’t know who I was or have a point of view.”
The advantage of hosting a talk show, was, of course, the paycheck. Ricki admits, “I basically was grateful to have the job. “I thought, ‘Great, I can pay my rent for six months.’”
Now 44, Ricki Lake’s priorities have changed a bit. While she surely is still glad for the compensation, Ricki is now more interested in helping other women. Her role model? None other than talk show queen Oprah Winfrey. “When [Oprah] was in the audience, running around, had her arm around an audience member, you felt she understood you, related to you, wasn’t on any higher level than you. And you felt like your voice was heard. That’s the show I’m looking to do.”
Ricki Lake’s exuberance made her a delightful person to watch on Dancing with the Stars. And it looks like she really does want to help others. As such, we expect great things from her new show!
