Season Two of ”The X Factor“ premiere is upon us and we have two new judges in Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. Britney Spears and Demi Lovato join the old guard in Simon Cowell and L. A. Reid. Tonight is all about auditions so it’s always fun to watch the talented and the totally delusional. Let’s get this season started!
Simon Cowell’s signature snark is back and as acerbic as ever. But Simon Cowell isn’t the only judge with some rude sensibilities. Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have learned that in order to get some serious screen time, they have to keep up the honesty. Apparently Britney is not that innocent. She asks one auditioning contestant: “Who let you onstage?” She criticizes another with: “I felt I was listening to Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
So let’s get started with the talented and the tepid.
We start out in Austin, Texas for the first round. Thousands of people who apparently don’t have jobs (or bosses who care) crowd the lines. Simon Cowell claims that he will be in a better mood this season. Why? That’s why people like you.
The first up on the audition block is Paige Tomas. A couple of mean girls in the wings, Kaci and Kaylee, snipe about Paige and her daughter. Paige Tomas is only 21 and has a three-year old. She’s struggled to become a singer but she’s not having any success. She’s studying to become a nurse. She sings “I’m Going Down” by Mary J. Blige. Paige impresses the judges at the audition which shuts up the bitchy girls in the wings. Britney Spears says Paige is bright and flawless. Demi Lovato is blown away by her stage presence and says she could be a potential superstar. L. A. Reid calls her a star as well. Simon Cowell is actually enthusiastic and says she is commercial with a capital C.
50-year-old Shawn Armenta is up next and this is gonna be one of those that the producers throw in for the pathetic factor. He declares that he will be performing his own composition, “Candy Girl”. Simon Cowell calls Shawn a mouse trying to be an elephant. Shawn is surprisingly shocked. Shawn, you’re 50. You’d probably have made it by now if you were destined to be a pop star. Demi Lovato informs him that sometimes the dreams people have just aren’t the right dreams for them. Shawn says that at least he doesn’t use autotune. Britney feels violated by his very presence and wants him to go away.
We now get to montage through a lot of epic failures. Fortunately, and possibly surprisingly, Britney is kind of funny. So perhaps she won’t be the train wreck that Paula Abdul was after all.
The auditions continue tomorrow and we still have yet to hear who will be the host of the show. Will it be Khloe Kardashian or will some last minute star sweep in and snatch it from her? And now that both The Voice and The X Factor have premiered, which one will you be watching?
