Colton Dixon competed on the eleventh season of FOX’s hit reality TV competition, American Idol. The 20 year old from Murfreesboro, Tennessee made it into the Top 7 on the singing show and impressed the judges and viewers with his talent. Now, Dixon is touring with the rest of the 2012 cast for the American Idol Live Tour. Before performing at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey Dixon talked about the tour, his debut album and his future plans!
How has the 2012 American Idol Live Tour been going?
It’s amazing! We’re nearing an end, we have three or four shows left. After 42, 43 shows you’d think it would wear on you and it has in some areas but I know I’m going to miss these guys like crazy. It’s very bittersweet–we just have had so much fun together this summer.
What is it like to have the opportunity to interact with your fans?
I think that’s what the tour is all about: to give all these people that have voted for us a chance to come out, see us in person all together for the first time. That’s been my favorite part of the day of every show. Going outside and meeting everybody and putting a face with the folks. It’s really been remarkable–very humbling as well. We would stay outside and sign all night if we could!
What are your plans after the tour?
I actually just signed a record deal with EMI/CMG (Christian Music Group) under the Sparrow Records. A record will be out at the very beginning of the year. I’m really pumped about that. I’m getting to do an original while on the tour and that song will be on iTunes September 25–it’s crazy!
What genre of music do you think your album will fit into?
It’s going to be in the Christian industry so I’m really excited about that. As far as music goes it’s going to be edgy but there’s going to be pop elements as well. The best way I can describe it as Switchfoot meets 30 Seconds to Mars meets Coldplay and The Fray. You’re going to have these different blends of all these genres of music and you’re going to get me.
You have experienced so much in the past year. Has there been a ‘wow’ moment?
I could go on and on and on! American Idol’s just a great opportunity and it opened so many doors. But I think the coolest thing about this entire process has been getting to go through the entire process with my sister for so long. She made it to the Top 48 this season. It’s so cool to have someone to lean on and vice versa. While you’re on the show it’s just hell week it really is and having someone there just to help you out–even that little bit was amazing.
