Outside of the presidential election, Honey Boo Boo Child might be today’s most divisive topic! Fans and haters of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo are equally passionate, be they from Cali, New York…or Honey Boo Boo’s hometown! That’s right — several residents of Honey Boo Boo’s hometown are unhappy that the TLC show is perpetuating the redneck stereotype. And they’re ready to fight back!
Honey Boo Boo and her family may be recognized on an international scale, but they still call the little town of McIntyre home. With a population of just 650, McIntyre has the small-town feel that many Americans enjoy reminiscing about. But no matter what her mom says, Honey Boo Boo is not the typical small-town girl. Even if she wasn’t America’s newest celebrity, Honey Boo Boo’s hyper personality would be enough to set her apart from the crowd.
While there are certainly residents of McIntyre enthusiastically rooting for the Thompson family, others are not too happy about their less-than-flattering portrayal on cable television. Chamber of Commerce president Jonathan Jackson counts himself among the naysayers. He wishes that Here Comes Honey Boo Boo would spend a little time showing off some of the nicer features of McIntyre, but realizes that his wish won’t come true in the near future. He told the Hollywood Reporter, ”You can’t very well ask and expect a television network to possess tact and taste – unless it makes them a dollar.”
Local business owner Anita McGahee enjoys watching Here Comes Honey Boo Boo on TV, but she is also worried that viewers will get the wrong idea about McIntyre. “It bothers me a little that people might think that that’s what everyone here is like. It’s like we all don’t have any manners.”
Actually, from the glimpses we get of McIntyre, it seems like a pretty nice place. The town just has the misfortune of being home to America’s craziest family. And as long as the Thompson family is cashing in, their neighbors will have to endure the family’s antics.
