Talk show host, Jerry Springer showed America he was willing to learn some new moves when he put his dancing skills to the test on Dancing with the Stars. Watching him do the waltz was a stark contrast to his main gig hosting the tabloid talk-show The Jerry Springer Show. The 68 year-old is currently hosting a dating game show called, Baggage. With the debut of the first ever all-star cast on the ABC reality TV show, Springer shared his experiences with She Knows’ Reality TV Magazine!
While booked for a six-week engagement at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City hosting The Price Is Right Live Show, Springer talked about his time on Dancing with the Stars.
“It was a lot of fun–I was what 35 years older than all the other people on the show. So there were obviously things physically that I couldn’t do that the younger people could but it was enjoyable,” he said.
Springer adds that he learned a very important lesson, “I learned that becoming a professional dancer is not my career–that’s what I learned!” He explained with a laugh.
At first he had major reservations about joining the cast but says in the end, he did it for a very special person in his life.
“My daughter talked me into it because she was getting married and I was going to learn the waltz for the father-daughter dance which is what I did,” he explained however he never expected to stay on the show for so long.
“It kind of was silly because I lasted seven weeks!” He recalls, “People kept voting for me not because I could dance but because they wanted to hurt me–every week they wanted to see me have to learn a new dance and brutalize me. People voted because I was telling jokes not because I was a good dancer.”
Finally, on the fourth week, it was time for the waltz. Springer remembers, “My daughter was there and that was the best moment for me of the whole show because I got to dance the waltz for her and she came out on the floor–that was the best memory.”
While his dancing days paid -off, Springer says they weren’t exactly necessary when it was time for his daughter’s big day.
“We danced at her wedding. In the middle of the father-daughter dance she looks up at me and says, ‘Dad, they can’t see our feet,’ because her dress was covering her feet. And I said, that’s right–I didn’t have to learn how to do the waltz, I could have just rocked back and forth. The whole thing was for nothing!” He said laughing.
