Further entrenching herself in reality TV madness, Amber Portwood is speaking out as to the reason she chose to spend time in Indiana’s Rockwood Correctional Facility versus rehab in an upcoming MTV special, Amber Behind Bars. The special will air on October 9th, and will be hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky. Amber, 22 has struggled with drug addictions and anger management issues for four seasons of Teen Mom. Amber has decided against court-ordered rehab and opted to serve a five-year sentence in Indiana, which began on June 5. Why did she choose hard time over rehab? “I wasn’t getting anything out of treatment,” Amber stated. She went on to admit, “I was still doing drugs.”
Amber is the struggling mom of Leah, who is 3 years old. Amber readily admits that her parenting skills weren’t up to par, saying,“[Leah] needs more,” and “I just know that I can be better than I was.”
During the interview, Amber tells Dr. Drew that the drugs took control of her life. She prioritized drugs before everything else. “I was very selfish and all I wanted was to find drugs so I didn’t have to withdrawal and I didn’t care about who was in my way.” Hopeful for her clean and sober future, Amber said, “I’ll actually be there for [Leah] this time and I’ll be that mom that she wants.”
Amber was originally found guilty of felony domestic abuse charges in November 2010 after she was shown shoving, punching, slapping and choking her boyfriend, Gary Shirley, on the Teen Mom show. She was then arrested on May 24 for violating her drug court probation requirements by failing a urine test and then lying about it, Prosecuting Attorney Rodney Cummings stated.
She was arrested once again last December when a probation search uncovered “a fairly sufficient amount of several different prescription pills” that were not prescribed to her, Cummings said.
