Yay! Dmitry Sholokhov was crowned the champion of the textiles in last night’s exciting Project Runway finale! This season, Dmitry was a huge fan favorite for his gentlemanly approach and hilarious observations. And of course, the fact that he’s an accomplished ballroom dancer doesn’t hurt either.
We already loved Dmitry simply because he was far less obnoxious than the other contestants on Project Runway. Combine that with a real eye for fashion and you have an instant fan hit! The Project Runway champ managed to make himself even more likable in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. Once again displaying that amazing sense of modesty, Dmitry was quick to note his surprise at being the winner of such a challenging competition. He’s also surprised at the postive reactions he’s received from fans throughout the course of the season. “It made me happy. It’s so important to have fans when you’re a designer, and I like interacting with them.”
One reason fans enjoyed watching Dmitry was his ability to come up with amusing catchphrases during his TV interviews. Commenting on the use of “one-way monkey,” Dmitry mentioned, “I never really know where any of the phrases come from. They just come to my head. English is my second language, and it’s just what I say in the moment.”
The designer later proceeded to give an excellent example of this language phenomenon while commenting on fellow contestants. When asked if he would like to work with Elena again, he responded, “Oh, not Elena. That girl, she would get into my bones.”
Dmitry’s a multi-talented guy who can do much more than just design outfits and come up with hilarious phrases. He’s also an amazing ballroom dancer! That dancing has certainly impacted his ability to design clothing, although not in the way you might expect. “I don’t think [ballroom] had anything to do with designs, but it taught me discipline and determination. Ballroom dancing is a sport, and you have to be on top of your game. I think that’s the biggest lesson I learned.”
Maybe Dmitry should be on Dancing with the Stars! He could design costumes and then dance in them! We’re sure he and the fans would both have a blast!
