Last week on Dancing With the Stars there were no eliminations! Team Gangnam Style and Team Call Me Maybe’s performances and the Guilty Pleasure duets were split between two episodes courtesy of the Presidential debate. Tonight, despite Hurricane Sandy hitting the east coast, the show must go on. It’s Country Night, featuring a group dance for extra points. Yee haw! Get the details and highlights after the jump…
Dancing With The Stars kicks off with Little Big Town performing Pontoon live. This tune will now be stuck in everyone’s heads for days. Mmmm, motorboatin’…
Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd rehearsed on the Switched At Birth set between scenes this week. Tonight they’re doing their, er, country cha cha, to Shania Twain’s I Feel Like A Woman. There’s nothing remotely country about their costumes which include knee high stockings, a top hat, and shiny black latex pants for Gilles. The dance is stellar. Not surprisingly, Bruno is a huge fan – mostly of Gilles’ pants. Len and Carrie Ann also rave, although Carrie Ann, who by the way is secured in her chair this week with rope, mentions Gilles’ ‘T-Rex hands’. It’s 9s from Len and Carrie Ann and a 9.5 from Bruno for 27.5 total.
Next up it’s Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel, who are doing a country-infused rumba to Hunter Hayes’ Wanted. Again, the costumes are distracting with Louis in a plaid western shirt and dress slacks (really?) and Sabrina sporting a panel from someone’s green sheer curtains. In any case, the dance is breathtaking. The judges use words like ‘beautiful’, ‘chills’, ‘balance’, and ‘fantastic’ to describe it. They net a perfect score – 30!
Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy are dancing a tango to Carrie Underwood’s Good Girl tonight. Kelly is gorgeous in a red maribou-trimmed gown and Val’s smokin’ hot in a tux. They’re way better than last week and Kelly actually smacks Val in the face during the routine! Intense! They earn comeback kudos from Carrie Ann and Bruno likens Kelly to Vivien Leigh. It’s 9s across the board for 27 total.
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani faced more issues during practice when she suffered continued neck pain. They forged ahead and tonight are performing a Viennese waltz to Why You Wanna by Jana Kramer. Tony’s sporting a plaid shirt and jeans (thank you!), while Melissa’s in a cute two-piece white number. The dance is understated, but very well done. Len stands and applauds! He claims they had the ‘how’ and the ‘wow’! Bruno enthuses about it being weightless, fluid, and lyrical. Carrie Ann triggers an argument when she says Melissa doesn’t dance ‘out’ enough. Carrie Ann gives them a 9.5, and Len and Bruno offer up the coveted 10s! 29.5 total!
Next week the remaining pairs will be doing fusion dances – combining two different dance styles - which will be chosen for each other on tomorrow night’s results show.
Fun! Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough are performing one of those country cha cha’s to Kenny Chesney’s She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy! First pair to wear totally country & western costumes – Shawn’s in a teeny denim top and red skirt while Derek’s in plaid and jeans – both sporting buckles! The dance is fantastic with lots of personality. Bruno hollers to forget about the tractor – they’re sexy! He calls the dancing incredible. Carrie Ann agrees with him that they did an amazing job of blending the cha cha and country. Len says the choreography was fantastic and the dancing terrific, but pooh-poohs the use of gimmicks like the tractor.
Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy are tackling a rumba tonight on Dancing With The Stars to Blake Shelton’s Home. Kirstie’s pretty in pink and Maks is sporting a western shirt – wide open – and tight black jeans with a big buckle – yes, please! The routine is sexy and sweet. Carrie Ann says everyone got lost in the passionate rumba – super sexy! Len compliments the expressive arms and says it was clear, clean, and classy. He complains about a lack of hip action and does a disastrous job of trying to demonstrate what he means. Bruno raves. They get a 9.5 from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and an 8.5 from Len – 27.5 total.
Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff, who were warned about making more of a connection with each other last week, are doing a Viennese waltz tonight to the emotional song, Sara Beth, by Rascal Flatts. It’s a gorgeous, flowing routine – gah! Len loved it! Bruno calls it graceful and flowing – Apolo’s involvement with Karina was the best he’s ever seen. Carrie Ann says it was poetry in motion. They get 10s from all three judges for a perfect score of 30!
Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke have chosen a foxtrot to Islands In The Stream for country night. Cheryl’s in a wench dress and Emmitt looks (yawn) dapper in a brown vest and pants – I swear they’ve had him in this costume before. Their dance is pretty fun to watch – especially Emmitt’s calf-roping solo. The judges seem lukewarm on the routine technically, saying they were a little off, but all agree it was entertaining. They get 8.5s from Carrie Ann and Len, and a 9.5 from Bruno for 26.5 total.
Finally it’s time for the group dance – usually just for fun, but this time two extra points are up for grabs. Big & Rich perform Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy and Play Chicken With A Train live while the dancers do their routine, which is a real boot stompin’ country dance! The girls are in their Daisy Dukes and the guys are sporting big belt buckles and western shirts. Each couple does a duet within the group routine to show their stuff – the best is Kirstie spanking Maks’ butt! Love it! Len says it was fun – they got the lowdown on the hoedown! Bruno enthuses, “Kirstie rides again!” Carrie Ann gives them a country hoot! Kirstie and Maks net the extra points for being most entertaining.
