It was a big night at the CMA awards for country music singers Blake Shelton and wife, Miranda Lambert. The Voice judge took home three awards including his third straight victory for male vocalist. But nothing could compare to the couple sharing song of the year for “Over You.”
According to Fox, Over You is a song Blake and Miranda co-wrote about the tragic death of Blake’s older brother, Ritchie in a car wreck 15 years ago. Blake explains, “I lost my brother in a car wreck when I was 14-years-old, and later in life when I decided I wanted to be a country singer, my dad always told me, ‘Son, you should write a song about your brother.’”
“I lost my dad in January, and it’s so amazing to me that tonight even after he’s gone, he’s still right,” he continued amid cheers from the audience.
Miranda cried as Blake said, “I just needed the right person to write this song with and the right person to sing it. I love you so much, baby,” he added kissing her forehead.
“For me as a songwriter that is as personal as I can get,” Blake said. “So that songwriter award, song of the year award, it will have its own shelf. It will have spotlights on it and an alarm and everything. Trip wires and there will be a land mine if you walk towards it. It is a real big deal to Miranda and I.”
Then it was Miranda’s turn to speak. “Thank you, Blake, for allowing me to sing this beautiful song and write it with you,” she said. “Thank you CMA and all of our peers for voting for us. It’s really emotional. We love y’all.”
Blake would also take home the award for Entertainer of the Year. “I didn’t think about that tonight. I was thinking there’s Taylor Swift right there,” he said “Really, this is pretty dumb that there’s anyone else even nominated.”
And Miranda won her third female vocalist of the year award. “Holy crap! I don’t necessarily deserve this but I’ll sure take it,” she said.
